Hi Guys, just wanted to introduce myself. I am from metro Detroit and enjoy riding all the great trail systems in Northern Michigan. I have an 87 KDX200 that I am working on restoring right now. First picture is as I bought it and second picture is where I am currently at on it. It looks quite good in the pictures, but it is basically pieced together/not running and all of the wearable parts are roached.
I've got the frame powder coated, and all aluminum pieces vapor blasted. Got the forks / triple clamps together and am currently working on rear shock and rear disk brake conversion.
I hope to learn a lot from you guys and maybe contribute some knowledge of my own.... Needless to say, I'll be hanging out on the air cooled site quite a bit! lol

Joe87KDX,
Panic In Detroit! You've got a good project going. Curious to know if you're a displaced Yupper because you shared you ride in northern MI.
Not only will you find a mother lode of KDX info in this forum, you'll also find forum members are a friendly bunch.
Looking forward to seeing your project achieve operational status.

Welcome to kdxrider.net! Congratulations on the 1987 KDX200!
What method did you use on rear disc brake conversion?
Looks great, keep at it!

Re: Hi from MI
Thanks for the welcome! I am originally from the west side of the state about an hour northeast of Grand Rapids (so I've always been a troll... lol). Work brought me to the Detroit area. There is lots of great riding in the norther half of the lower peninsula and all throughout the UP (motorcycle only, less than 50" and then two track/SxS stuff).
Regarding the rear disc conversion, my current plan in the following:
- '01 KX125 rear wheel / hub / rotor. Supposedly the KX125 spacer will get me proper chain alignment, but I can machine custom ones if needed.
- H series KDX200 caliper & bracket
- Will be modifying the swing arm for the H-series caliper bracket as the stay shape is different (I have an H-series swing arm, so I may cut that stay off and weld it to the 87 swing arm). Still figuring out options here.
-Going to try a YZ250 brake hose... but not certain if that's the right direction yet...
-I have a YZ250 master cylinder and brake pedal assembly mocked up to the frame. The pedal fit the existing KDX location with the help of some bronze sleeve bearings from McMaster Carr. I had to fab and weld a master cylinder bracket to the frame prior to powder coat. Below is a picture. (I'll machine a better washer assembly to hold the pedal on when I get to final assembly.... probably years from now.... lol)

OOH WOW. I like that bracket!
I never got around to doing mine, but was going to switch to 89 - 94 wheel and brakes
