Hi.

I am Belgian (from Belgium, I speak french)

I apologize for my English is pretty bad (helped a little by google, lol)

I am 26 and I am (as you all) fan of KDX, especially the latest model of KDX 200/220.

I had a KDX 200 1999 ago 4 or 5 years, and I made the mistake of selling it to a friend.

I have recently a KX 250 2002, as follows:




I just change it to supermotard (for road use), and it is the result, lol:




She is too brutal and wicked for me. Then the gearbox (5 only) is not adapted.

I would like to regain the engine flexibility of my old KDX. I LOVE this engine ! With racing exhaust, it's awesome.

But kx parts can be found much more easily, and appearance is prettier.

I therefore intend to Find an KDX 200 or 220 (after 95) and make a hybrid.
KX frame, "and KDX engine" :)

It appears that there are several people here who made this hybrid?

Countless modifications to discourage me ^^ I thought it would be easier ;)

For the modification of the swingarm, I expected it.

The engine mounts, obviously; but modify the exhaust, cylinder head, air box, and others ... I did not expect it: P

I'm in talks to buy back my old KDX to the friend to whom I had sold.

She is currently "abandoned in its own juice" because it is in ignition failure.
Serious breakdown, I had already looked old. The stator was defective. Replaced, then rode the bike a little bit and then grabs engine misfire and turn off.

The stator smells burnt, and the bike restarts if it is replaced. But when riding a bit, when pulled in, engine misfire, Then turn off ...

Nobody understands what is happening, the electrical circuit looks good, changed ignition coil.

But! I renovated the engine with a cast-iron shirt, new connecting rod bearings, and all it takes.

Perhaps it would remove the top engine to check if piston and reboring needed.

The payoff when complete is worth it.

There are many ways to do a hybrid, some involve much less modification depending on which parts you use for the build. When I did mine it was engine mounts, swingarm, removing rear head stay and some small bracket fabrication for the pipe. All very simple with just standard tools and use of a welder. The payoff when complete is worth it.

What have you use as frame? I read kx 2001 and 220kdx engine. But ... KX 125 or 250 ?

Besides the KDX 200 has to happen,i have already :

- KX 250 2002 (or 2001?) supermotard, which broke my arm...
- KX 250 1998 completely dismantled for rebuild but complete
- KX 250 1994 -1998 parts (frame, and others): I wanted to base myself on that frame to create the hybrid.

From what I compared, the motor and lower part of the frame is the same from 1998 to 2002. Except for the aluminum rear frame of 2002 and supports fairings and tank. I'm right ?

The engine cradle on a 250 is larger to accept the larger engine. You can use a 250 frame for the KDX engine, but it will look a little off - like you've put a small motor in there. It will also create some more work on getting a pipe to fit. You'll need to make an extension on the pipe so that it will clear the downtube. Hope that makes sense.

The 200 and 220 both use the same bottom end, so all dimensions are the same.

+1 what Ted said. You can use a KX250 frame, but the KDX200/220 grew out of the KX125 and the H/220 motors fit the 99-02 KX125 frames with almost no modification.

Because the heavy work that request with the frame 250 kx, I will wait to find a frame KX 125. In any case, I must first resolve the ignition failure on the KDX.
I'll probably rebuild and ride with while waiting for.

Speaking of it, this is it, after years my old KDX is "back" in my house. Photos soon.

I need a CDI to try.

I have seen that "osobad" had one for sale, in the section sales.
I'll try to contact him, unless someone in europe (or Belgium ???) would have one ?

Why go to all the trouble of a hybrid? The short powerband of the KX can be made into a long one with the right exhaust pipe design. Along with making the powerband longer, the power is also spread out and doesn't peak high as before.

What you say interests me. Have you a concrete example, or someone who would have done?

Modify a 2 stroke exhaust was not done randomly. The length, diameter, angle ... is important and must match with the engine.

However, on the kx 250, there is not only the exhaust which is problematic.

The 5-speed transmission is very short, and it lacks a 6th gear! On supermotard i am very bothered by this.

5 speed is plenty. I ride a Suzuki 100 on the street and it only has 4 gears. I designed a pipe for it that has a 3000 RPM powerband. I am the creator of a free pipe design program that works on Excel. Read my info on expansion chambers at http://www.dragonfly75.com/motorbike/ECtheory.html
Your KX needs a 6th gear only because the pipe powerband is narrow, which is common for a motocross bike.

the main limiting factor if you want a broad powerband pipe on your KX is if there is room for it.
