Okay, just getting started on this project with my son. The KX we picked up for $125 had been under water. I'm having difficultiies removing the bearing from the lower fork mount bracket. Any suggested techniques?

I know I could put heat to it with a torch but a little scared to damage the "stem" on the holder. I've sprayed it with corrosion X and let it sit for 2 days already.



And yes, I only claim to be a shade tree mechanic, however, we will complete this project!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

The lower bearing on the stem is pressed on... that is probably why you are having problems getting it off. You can't save it so you might as well cut it off.

Thanks guys! its off. Didn't even get a chance to finish my beer in the process.

Looks a though there is some significant pitting just at the bearing edge (top side). Must be where the water held? Can I have this welded and then grinded/sanded down for repair?

great video. Exactly the kind of stuff I need.

You could have it pressed out, Tigged and turned probably. Or just buy a new bottom tree with stem off eBay... probably work out to about the same costs.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking, saw complete triple tree on ebay for $49!

While I'm thinking of it, any suggestions for improving the fork suspension while I'm replacing all the seals? Not sure what weight rider they are set up for but I'm right at 190lbs. I'm not a racer, only woods rider trying to stay connected to my 22 year old who loves riding. He bought a new KTM 250 and gave me the very well maintained 2002 KDX.

That was a great video clip, anyone have a liink to a video detailing fork valve replacement or tuning?
