Need a little KIPS / Motor help please..

So the ole KDX has been stored in the garage over the winter and i've spent the last week cleaning it up / general maintenance and changed the tires for this year. This afternoon i started it up and went for a short ride. when i got back i noticed the leak in the picture above. I believe it was leaking most of last year too but i contributed it to the build up of an exhaust leak at the flange that i've since corrected.

Whats going on here? is it just the gasket that needs replaced?

While i had the bike apart for cleaning. (i didn't break down the motor) i did a compression check cold and it was 155-160

Also.... i have a habit of changing the oil every ride or every other ride and i began to notice last year that my oil level was slightly lower after a days ride than where i had filled it to.

Am i leaking oil into the KIPS or is this just exhaust spuge??? Or am i paranoid and just need to replace the KIPS gasket.

When i change the gasket can i do it without pulling the motor out. it looks like if i remove all the motor mount bolts and leave the swing arm bolt in i could just rotate it up a bit to get at it.

If i had to guess, i would say it's the exhaust. The reason i say that is because the oil is splashed upwards and forward of the gasket for the KIPS. Usually when riding it will go backwards from the air flow. I don't think it could go up from such a small leak.

It was recommended that you put a bead of permatex around the pipe,where it goes into the motor. I did that and it cured my problem .

its not the exhaust i have it sealed with gasket maker and there is no spuge at the flange now. also i could see "bubbling" at the the point pictured...

I have to agree it looks like the gasket on the cover is leaking . . .

BTW did it start all of a sudden?

BTW - I'd think you'd see a smokey, stinky exhaust if the oil made it's way into that part of your engine. I guess you've checked for leaks? One place where some have developed leaks is at the coutershaft seal. That kinda leak is often noticed because it gets oil on the chain.

Happened the same to me last year... I replaced the gasket and it was gone!!

I've ordered a new gasket and i'll change it next week. I'll also take a look at the valve and see how sooted up it is.

I replaced the countershaft seal after the last ride of last year. It was leaking but not now.

I've never torn down an engine and have been intimidated to try. I needed to get at the kips cover to change the gasket and decided...screw it i don't really know how long it's been since the last service / top end.

so here is what i have...

KIPS valve

top end..... ya think its running a little rich???

no scratches or marring in the cylinder (yeah!)

What a mess... How do i get this carbon off the KIPS!!!

this doesn't look too bad, it was due.
Don't forget to clean the side valves and lube during assembly, check the manual.
To clean it, I've used wd40 soak and let sit as much as possible. wipe/scrub LIGHTLY then cleaned with carb/brake cleaner.
New rings are recommended (and cheap)
Done.

lint and reflection.. I ran a cloth through it quickly before the pic.

The KIPS was really crudded up. I had to pull pretty hard to get it out. i find it hard to believe that it has been working properly.

And before anyone asks... yes i did support the exhaust valve actuator shaft while loosening the LEFT HAND nut!! The online manual is the best resource I've ever bought off the internet

I'm going to clean the piston and check out if it is OEM or not. I was told by the original owner that he had done a top end recently before i bought it back in '05. I didn't know what questions to ask about it back then and it was my fist two stroke bike. But if it is OEM it will be replaced.

I was going back to school when i bought it and in the two years I've had it.. I have personally put about 30-35 hrs on the bike.
