2nd opinion on odd jetting

Post by race27 »

so here's my situation 97 200 that runs perfect everywhere but is jetted lean all around. here's the data to work with fresh top and bottom rebuild with about 2 hours run time. new boyesen reeds air filter plug fresh 93 non ethanol motul 710 at 32 to 1. cranks 1st kick hot or cold. very happy with the tuning but all is on the lean side. new 35 air striker and to get it running absolutely perfect I'm at 148 on main and 38 on pilot air screw 3 1/4 out. air box lid is on with snorkel removed. if I go to 150 on main it starts to stutter and blubber at wide open. while on the 150 main I can remove the lid and it clears up and runs fine at wot but its loud so I tune it with the lid on and no snorkel. fresh packed silencer and cylinder has fredette porting and when assembling set the timing in the middle,no retard or advance. I'm wondering if the float might be a little high although I never get any drips from the overflow. strange situation I know but I've checked for lean situations and cant find any. I've got a long strip I can test on for plug chops and short desert simulations and after going thru the gears and holding wide open for 10-12 seconds it doesn't climb in temperature (about 180). anybody else run into odd jetting like this before.

Hmm, that is extremely lean jetting compared to an OEM carb but obviously is not with your aftermarket PWK AS carb.

I have a feeling it has almost everything to do with the needle installed in it. I would note what is installed in it. Then you can compare it versus the needles commonly used in OEM carbs. Also might be a bit related to what the float level height is set at.

when talking about jetting it's important to discuss the needle as it affects everything from idle to wide open throttle

Also is it a genuine PWK, in my experience the Chinese copies have an emulsion tube/needle jet which is undersize

Was testing my main jet yesterday using widened O2 sensor, 162 gives pretty good numbers, that's with 1174 needle
