My H-model has the dreaded sloppy rear brake pedal. Thinking a bronze bushing would help, but where do you go for one that’ll fit?

Amazing how they just went with the crudest possible design for a part that gets exposed to the elements and abuse of this heavily used part! Amazed that it’s lasted this long.

My brake pedal was sooooo hogged out and off center, I had to bore a new hole and machine a bushing to press in. The previous owner had tried to do some sort of hack repair with a welder, but that just caused the hole to oblong even more. I found the area that had the most “meat” left on the bone, and bored it out for a bushing. This was slightly off center from original, but it’s not noticeable. Bushing I made out of a soft grade of steel, since it is much easier to replace than the peg welded to the frame, I’d rather this bushing be the wear point. As SS109 can attest to after riding my bike, the rear brake now has zero slop in it.

Yes, I can attest to that! I know mine is getting to the point where something will need to be done to it. However, I am looking at doing a hybrid which will take care of all those little issues creeping up.

I am thinking that when I strip mine down, I might convert the pivot pin to a newer pin-bolt setup used on the newer bikes. That way I also get the benefit of Oring sealing. Have the pedal bored at a machine shop to accept the bolt, take an all thread nut and cut it down to proper length and weld that sucker up. What I plan to do at least. Seems easier than bushing the existing lever and brings the design into this century. Also the easily replaced bolt bends instead of the frame, lever or whatever else.

Just when I thought everything is okay with my KDX. Now I've go to the garage and wiggle the brake pedal!
