Exhaust Packing on 1984
Hey all, brand new to this forum and my first post. I recently picked up an 84 KDX 200 and am in the process of restoring it to stock. I removed the exhaust to burn out the carbon and also removed the silencer baffle. There were some remnants of old packing material in there when I pulled it out. Reading the factory service manual it states to clean the baffle with a wire brush and just re-install it. The manual says nothing about repacking the baffle. Just wondering if that could be correct as Ive never seen a 2-stroke that did not have packing in the baffle. I searched the forum and the webiverse, but could not find any info regarding this for an early air cooled KDX. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to kdxrider.net.
Is it the stock spark arrestor? There are several KDXs that do not come with packing.

Yes it the stock exhaust. The part I am referring to is 49099 in the diagram above. Someone had packed it before as there was some remnants of packing in there when I removed the baffle. Just trying to determine if I need to repack it before I put it back together or if it is not supposed to be packed. Thanks for the reply!

I would try to pack it if possible. Just don't block flow.
