Compression test pricing

In the US, how much should I expect to pay for a compression test on an air cooled engine? (1981 KDX250)
Also. I see one can buy testers for $30 or even less. Worth the trouble?

I would say a 1/2 to one hour shop labor. It would be worth getting a compression gauge. Very easy to do.

Best would be to get a leak down tester. You need a compressor for it to work but it tells you much more about the engines condition.

Check you tube. Many vids on them.

I would agree with s10 that you should have both these tools. I bought my compression tester from advanced auto for about $30 and I spent another $25-$30 making a leak down tester that uses a squeeze bulb with air release dial from an old blood pressure cuff that was up in the closet lol. I wouldn't use a compressor to fill it even if it had a shrader though. A bike pump would be fine for filling the needed 6 psi. I'd be afraid a compressor would quickly blast too much air in and blow a seal. Spend the money the tools that you can keep rather than having a shop do it.

NVrider, I just made a post showing the leak down tester I made.
