Is there a trick to removing the front axle? (my manual hasn't arrived yet...sorry to ask such a simple question)

No trick at all just take the nut all the way off and remove the bolt. Use some pliers on the bolt and spin it while your pulling it out.

P.O. has neglected maintenance on this bike for a while. Axle is kind of frozen in place....I'll get a bigger hammer and some WD40 and a some propane heat.......thanks.

The bigger hammer and propane heat did the trick. I almost deformed the threaded end of the axle but not quite...still usable. Wire brushed the crud off of the axle and inner parts...added a little grease...good to go.
