Twin shock kdx200

Post by KDX Geoff »

At the vinduro's we have here l like the look of twin shock PE's even though they're not green.

As I'd really like a twin shock l had a few choices. A PE, a klx or an older kdx. Nether of the first 2 options suited me and as l dont want another non Australian kdx l thought a kdx 200 engine in a klx250 frame would be a good project.

The donor frame.

Image

l placed an set of engine cases in the frame to see how it fitted and as you can imagine a little 200 engine in that 4 stroke frame gave plenty of room.

Image

The first win was that I'm able to use the rear engine mount on the 200 motor with the swingarm bolt on the klx frame. There's a difference of 6mm in the width between the kdx engine and the klx spacer which looks to be an easy mod. I'll need to weld on the bottom engine mount to the frame, make the front mount plates and weld on something for the head stay to bolt to.

The sprockets look like they'll align fairly well too.

Cheers

Thanks Jason

Engine sits nice in the frame and happy days the sprockets line up pretty well.

The exhaust is going to require some professional input. Its either going under the airbox where the klx pipe went or on the inside of the frame but while l like the look of it inside the frame, it means a custom airbox.
The headstay off an '86 200 covers the space from the head to the frame so it looks straight forward to weld the new mount onto the frame.

While it looks good from the side...l think I'll end up getting a pipe made.

It does look good.

Any ideas on making an air box or using one from another bike?

l can only think of 2 things that'll take some real effort now. The first one is the pipe but l can get a pipe made so that's really only a wallet issue.

The carb position is very different between the klx (high at the head) and the kdx (low near the cases).
A mate suggested a twin shock kx/kdx box may be the go and fit with minimal modification.

I've sent pics of the pipe to the bloke for his input, l like the look of the pipe going inside the frame and it makes the exhaust simple to go inside the frame and the shock/side cover but makes the airbox difficult. Going under the airbox might make the pipe look a bit off.

I'll see what Geoff the pipe man thinks

Check out VMX magazine. There was a build there where the guy used a twin shock KX 125 for his. You can purchase the issue and see how he did his. It seemed like an easy one.

I have that mag. There's a lot more KLX/KDX bikes around my way that the KX's and l also want the longer suspension travel klx suspension and blinkers etc on it like my other kdx's. So far, the conversion is looking straight forward...
