'84 KDX200 - yet another flywheel question...

Hi,

I'm new here. Over here in the UK we have a reasonable Vinduro thing going on and I've just bought a very cheap and pretty original red 84 KDX200. There are a few parts missing; headlight, left side panel, air-box cover, carb, flywheel, stator and flywheel cover. I did get two CDIs with it - not that they'll be a lot of use I suspect.

The bike looks like it was ridden pretty gently back when it was new and then got laid in the sun for the next 25 years. The parts that usually show a hard life like worn footrests, linkages, lower frame rails and so on are all good so if I can figure a flywheel/stator solution it'll get fixed up and ridden.

And so; has anyone fitted the later flywheel to the 84? Or does any other flywheel fit on there? If I can get a flywheel on I can figure the stator but any tips on that would be appreciated. I don't need a lighting stator or even an external rotor - just something that'll get the bike working somewhere near decent.

I've checked the crankshaft part numbers and the 83/84/85 is different from the C models (which I know will take an E/H flywheel) but is the difference just the weight or is the width and/or taper different on the left crank half?

How's the pipe/silencer situation with the A models? The stock one is pretty good and I can fit a newer silencer no problem - I have cutting & welding gear.

Has anyone done or seen a twin shock conversion? I'm tempted to do it but any knowledge is always good - even how not to do it.

A final question. In the UK we didn't get the red bike so spare plastics are even more difficult to get hold of than in the USA. Should I put the (pretty good condition) plastics on a shelf and find some green stuff to use for riding? I know it's hard to believe but over here in the UK with us being almost as far North as Alaska we do sometimes get a bit of rain and some muddy riding

I'll no doubt be back again and again asking for more information, anything anyone can add will be good.

I put a newer flywheel on my 84. Had to reslot the stator to clock it for the newer flywheel. Other than that it bolted right in. If u use the newer style stator as well u won't have to mod it. Image

Thanks for the information De250r.

I have a couple of new E model stators so I'll start there. I don;t think this will be a quick thing but as and when I get on with it I'll be back - probably with more questions.

Another question already. Does anyone have or know where I can find a red left side side panel and a red headlight surround? Mine's missing and all teh other plastics are original and in really good condition.

Cheers.

This is my first post here at KDXRIDER.

I have recently finnished a KDX200 84. The Flywheel was shagged, the magnets had let go before I got it. I have fitted a later model flywheel and it is running perfectly with the older model coils. I cut a new keyway in the flywheel but havent installed the woodruff key back into the crank anyhow and Im not having any problems with the flywheel moving or comeing loose on the crank either.

The tricky part was timing it. That was a case of using a timing light to mark the spark angle on the flywheel and then adjusting the position of the flywheel in relation to the crank with a dial gauge to measure how far off TDC. The new flywheel is a bit heavier than the old one but that tends to smooth everything out a bit anyhow. I managed to pick up another parts bike with a good original flywheel that I have been able to fit test to confirm that all my angles are ok.

DC Plastics has red plastics. I have their red side panels for my 84 200.

zz3gmc did you ever fit the rear disc brake to your 84? If you did do you have any info on what you did.
