2003 KX Hybrid Measurements

Post by jc7622 »

Here are some measurements in case they might come in handy for anyone thinking about building a hybrid based on the 2003+ KX125 and a late model KDX.

Measurement inside frame and swingarm pin -
7.8125" - KDX
7.8125" - KX

Inside width of swingarm with bushings in place -
2.052" - KDX
2.300" - KX

Length of the swingarm bushings that go on the inside of the swingarm -
2.127" - Stock swingarm bushings
1.785" - Shorter bushing measurement provided by Ebeck
0.342" - Difference (amount to cut off each bushing)

Are these measurements unique to using a late-model motor and the 2003-up chassis? In other words, are we cutting LESS THAN 9mm off each side of the swingarm? Up to this point, I've assumed that the diagram in ebeck's kxdx cookbook was gospel...9mm from each side of the swingarm. Do we cut less for the '03 and up hybrids?

Nothing is gospel. Only use any of this information as a guideline!

Measure and measure again! Numbers can be transposed and tolerances can differ.

You may think you have an 03 frame when you actually have an 02.

I may be in the market for another swingarm. 9mm from each side yielded a sizable gap between the swingarm and cases, even with the bearing race in position. The machinist says we can likely shim it up, but I'm thinking another swingarm might be needed instead.

dfeckel - how big of a gap are you talking about? Over the weekend I picked up this '04 to do another hybrid.

Here is how the kx 125 came from the factory, the RHS gap is larger than the LHS.

I cutoff 9mm from both sides of my swingarm and have a similar sized gap as to what the 125 has from the factory.

And if you think about it, there could be an advantage to have a slightly larger gap there. If it was really tight, dirt would never work its way out and you'd never really be able to clean the dirt that gets packed in there. But with a larger gap, the dirt may fall out as you ride or at least be easier to clean out without disassembling everything.

Has anyone adapted the KDX swingarm to a KX frame yet?

This is the only way I would even think about building one of these.

Why is that? Do you want to keep the snail adjusters or something? I would think adapting the KDX swingarm would introduce some trouble spots with alignment and maybe shock length.

I want a short swingarm with an 18" rear wheel. You know... a real woods setup.

Oh... and have a kickstand.

Gotcha. I don't know how much shorter a KDX swingarm is, or if they vary much from year to year. I suppose if somebody was brave they could try cutting a chunk out and TIG-ing it back together if there would still be enough clearance for the tire.

My MX'r riding buddies use trees for kickstands.

When I go riding with my son, I can never seem to find a tree, so I got the kickstand installed.

Image

And I'm working on an 18 inch rear tire.

I've never really looked at the linkage and swingarm of a KDX, but I could only guess that it would take a lot of work to make it fit correctly and work properly. Now that would be a one of a kind hybrid!

Can you do me a favour and measure the two mounting bolts centre to centre,I have an 00 hybrid and want to adapt a kickstand to it.
Thanks

I came up with about 93 mm. That kickstand is from a YZ 125 that I sold over the summer. All I had to do was elongate one of the mounting holes an 1/8 of an inch and it bolted right up.

I'm picking up the parts from the machinist tomorrow. I'll mock it all up and post some pics in the other thread.

Just a little closure on this topic--the numbers in the first post are spot-on. And 9mm per side from the swingarm is fine.
