Funny, I have the exact same problem. (I tore everything last winter and greased it good). It's not very hard to do and I will do it again this week. WD-40 probably won't fix the problem. I want to inspect all the bearings and repack to be sure everything's good.

If your suspension has been serviced reasonably, a ride in dusty stuff isn't going to cause a problem with suspension stuff (bearings and the like).
What the problem IS is dirt between the spring and its seats.
Again...considering the suspension to have been taken care of properly.
WD will work. So will some soapy water.
Soak it down (with your choice of 'stuff'). Grab aholt of the spring (suspension unloaded of course) and give it a turn or two.
Repeat as necessary. Maybe a couple of times........
Yes. A squeaking suspension can well be a telltale of impending doom (or it's already happened), but considering the explanation of what happened, my $.02 is it's just dirt.

Get used to it..happens quite regularly. Sometimes a wash doesn't get the squeak out...especially when the water dries off. The 'wet-n-twist' will take care of that part of it.

Mine was squeaking, so I assumed bearing needed grease. Tore apart and regreased linkage bearings. Still squeaks. I tried figuring out excactly where noise was from and noticed the rear spring seemed to be the cause, how in the heck can that be?
Turns out the FMF pipe was rubbing against the spring. A little prying with the tire iron and squeak is gone.
Ends up....
The middle linkage bearings and pin were totaly crusted, rusted and pitted beyond belief. (I had to dremel the cage to collapse it so I could press them out.
The guy I ride with said its always that one on his KX because its the lowest and is in the water more .
