Help with Idle Issues Air striker 35

Post by Tom The Sparky »

Afternoon Ladies and gentlemen,

Having issues with a 99 KDX200 that are currently doing my head in. Currently have a 99 KDX that refuses to idle/ idles to low and stalls out.

So far have replaced the reeds with Boyeson 2 stage reeds. Double checked the ignition timing (only going by the marks on the stator plate). Repacked the muffler and checked the pipe is not overly coked. As well as checked for crank seal leaks.

The bike originally had the standard Keihin carb which was showing signs of the jet block gasket failing as well as symptoms of the worn needle jet. Carby was replaced with a Air striker 35 (genuine, not chinese rubbish) running all as supplied jets, needle and air slide, with the exception of the pilot which is now a 42.

Bike does have the top cover on airbox removed a FMF pipe and silencer fitted as the only mods.

So now, as installed the slide looks to be really low in the bore (maybe 2mm clearance from bottom) even with the idle screw turned all the way in to coil bind. with a 42 pilot the air screw was still out about 3 turns, however with a 40 installed the air screw is still over 2 turns out and now feels a touch lean off idle. will be going back to a 42. Bike starts fine with choke, idles high when cold with choke off when cold but as soon as the bike warms up it will run for a couple of seconds on the idle screw and then die. Constantly blipping the throttle to keep this thing idling when pulled up is a pain especially as its my young fella's bike and he is hopping off easy idling electric start 4 strokes

Is there an issue with the air strikers having to short an idle screw to suit this application?

Help Much appreciated,
Tom

First off, where did you get your genuine Keihin PWK 35 Air Striker carb from, and how much did you pay for it?

Secondly, how are you setting your float level, and what height are you setting it at?

Thanks Chuck,

Carb was bought from SIP Scootershop in germany. Paid around $630 AU dollars for the carb. I have had a knock off Kiehin for experimenting with a different bike and there is enough differences in markings and quality to believe this one is genuine.

Float Height is just roughly set at about 16mm with the body inverted. No signs of overflow.

I have not started making any changes to needle height or main jet yet as i would like to get the idle/ pilot sorted first.
