Kickstart in neutral and instantly automatically shifts to first & stalls

This is a new development, I have the bike in neutral and not holding the clutch lever, I kickstart it and it fires up, but instantly automatically shifts to first then bike lunges forward and stalls. It happened to me twice on the last ride. If I hold the clutch in when I start the bike, of course everything is fine . Historically this bike has been a slight challenge to find neutral when I’m either in first or second, but not that big a deal. When in gear and holding the clutch, it does not creep forward at all, I’ve been using ATF type F for years with no issues. Thoughts on why it would automatically jump into gear when kickstarting it?

I would check the neutral stuff on the right side (neutral return spring and such - sorry my brain is foggy).
