Snapped power valves ?

So I bought this project bike and was taking apart the power valves. It looks like the power valves are snapped, but not sure since this is my first rebuild. I would appreciate if someone confirmed. Also, I noticed that a piece that snapped off from the power valve is stuck inside the cylinder. I will provide a photo of the piece stuck inside the cylinder, and I will also provide a photo, which shows what part of the valve the piece is from by referencing a photo of a complete valve set. Has this happend to anyone before ? Would really appreciate some help, thanks. 1992 kdx200

The sub-power valves on the 89-94 bikes are quite prone to failure as they are made out of aluminum. The ones you have are most definitely broken, and need to be replaced.

I replaced mine on my 92 as part of mine was broken with a set of the steel BDK valves. They are really well made and as far as I can tell they won't ever need replaced. I have about 30-40 hours on mine and they still look like new.
If you don't want to pay the $270 I believe they cost then you can find used replacements on eBay. If I recall correctly you can get the valves a bit cheaper if you order direct from BDK's website instead of their eBay shop.

Now for the broken part that's stuck in the cylinder, I am not entirely sure of the best way to remove that. I've not seen that before.
Maybe try tapping it with a punch and turning the cylinder over and tapping the cylinder with a rubber/plastic mallet to knock it loose.
If worst comes to worst you could probably drill it out, as scary as that sounds.

Thanks for joining kdxrider.net. The 1989 - 2994 valves will eventually break due to carbon build up if not maintained regularly.

BDK subvalves seem to get high praise.

Read up on the bread trick for getting out bearings for the round piece. Be careful, as you are dealing with aluminum. Use some lube on the walls.
