Re: Best pipe for 220
I know you're talking about the power but everything must work together to build confidence with the bike. Have you dialed in your suspension? Sag, springs, fresh oil, etc? If not, I would do that before changing the power delivery in any way.
As for the power, a FWW on the already heavy KDX will definitely tame it down and would be your best bet. However, you're saying you don't have the power to climb big hills. Lower gearing and the Gnarly Woods pipe will help that but at the expense of making the power snappier (stronger) on the bottom. The tires you run can make a significant difference as well. Like I said, everything works together as a whole to get the bike doing what you want. Always start with the the suspension. It makes a big impact on how the bike hooks up and handles the power from the engine.

Re: Best pipe for 220
I have the FMF Gnarly desert/rev pipe on my 200 and 220. Huge improvement on the mid and top end over stock and no loss of bottom end power even on the 200. All pros and no cons over the stock pipe. Both mine were bone stock when I bought them.

Re: Best pipe for 220
the best PRO mechanics advice who actually know and race KDX's (Freddette) says very strongly the FMF gnarly desert pipe is the 220s freind, this is the pipe I run and I can rip fast and I can crawl single track and Lug like a dream, the pipe was def worth the money and made my bike like a 250
IMO best mods would be:
FMF pipe
flywheel weight
Lectron carb (or at least carb mod as stock carb is crap)
gearing for me: 13//50 ( I can lug bike like a ktm up single track)
Reeds (boysen super stock)
((still need to get suspension done, hoping for next winter)

Re: Best pipe for 220
I want to go back and amend my earlier comment. I damaged my Woods pipe beyond reasonable repair and replaced it with an FMF "Rev" pipe.doakley wrote: ↑11:35 am Jun 06 2018 If it helps confuse things, Jeff Fredette agrees with Julien going so far as to state on his website ‘cannot recommend the Woods pipe for the 220’ . Still, I since I rarely ride in the upper rev range and usually poop my pants if I do, the Woods pipe works for me!
I was WRONG about my initial evaluation of the woods pipe. The Rev pipe doesn't give up anything on the bottom that I can tell but adds significantly to the mid and top. I stand corrected and now agree with the people who prefer the Rev pipe for the 220.

Re: Best pipe for 220
The FMF desert/rev pipe is the only pipe to run on the 200 and especially the 220 if you ask me.

Re: Best pipe for 220
Fredette only recommends the desert pipe for the 220 and recommends it for the 200 also. I think he only recommends the woods pipe for the 200 only for new and inexperienced riders if I remember right. The desert/rev pipe is king for the KDX.

Re: Best pipe for 220
Agreed the rev (or PC platinum) is the only pipe for the 220, and awesome on the 200 as well. But I have to add, the most fun I've had was on my 200 with Woods pipe and RB carb with the "D"taper hitting early in the 4th clip position. I regret selling that bike, have not come up with a setup that equalled this on my 220. Mind you, this was for woods, the smooth strong build allowed me to tackle the more difficult goat trails all day with no fatigue, with about the same usable power range of the 220 with rev.
Though I too preferred the 200/rev combo on the open trails. Not disagreeing, just wanted to add.

Re: Best pipe for 220
I had the Gnarly pipe on my 220 for a while. It would pull hard just off idle and right at midrange it would just stop revving. It was almost like it had a rev limiter. I installed the rev pipe and love it. Then I had RB do the head and carb and love it even more.
