1989 YZ125 Pile O' Parts build.

Back in March I picked up an '89 YZ125. Other then the frame and forks, everything else was in Tupperware bins. It was missing the cylinder, carb, and all the electrical components. Finally started the rebuild. Every bearing in the motor has been replaced and had the crankshaft rebuilt. I have to give Ken O'Connor Racing props, he had the crank rebuilt in a day. Dropped it off on a Wednesday, he said it would be done on the Saturday. He called me on Thursday saying it was all set. I am waiting on a rotor/flywheel.

Rattle canned the frame, it's going to be a rider so I didn't powder coat the frame.

Dropped the motor in. There is one issue, the kicker will not return. I must have not wound the spring tight enough. I know I should have dealt with that issue, but I could not resist dropping it in the frame.

Replaced all the bearings in the swing arm, linkage, and shock. People who neglect their bearing should be whipped. Some of the bearing were a major PITA to get out. Installed them.

How was the search for new OEM parts as well as aftermarket?

I am curious as to how the parts search is on a Yamaha.

New OEM parts was tough. Partzilla is your friend because you can cross reference parts to other part models(helps to search for used parts from ebay).

Aftermarket was not to bad; definitely not nearly as good as a post 2000 bike.

Speed and Sport Yamaha in PA has or can find a lot of the tough to find parts. They were great to deal with. Most of the parts were from ebay, just takes a lot of searching to weed out the junk from the good. Also, a lot of the parts people are asking big money for you can find new. An example was someone was selling
a set of rear sprocket bolts for $10. You can get them new for .68 ea.

Also, a major time saver was a Specbolt kit, all nice new fasteners; they have all most all of the bolts you need in their kit to put the bike back together.

I just put the spring on the holder. I should have wound it around once before I put it in the holder.

Update: the spring did not have to be wound around, it was the spring itself.

So a little update. Fixed the kicker issue, it was the spring itself. When I got the pile of parts, there were four kicker shafts and springs. Picked through them and used the best pieces. Then while working on the bike tonight it some how feel off the stand and snapped the kicker shaft in half. Here's the damage.

Can not believe the shaft snapped like that. So, after a lot of curse words, I had to open up the side case to change out the shaft with one of the other ones I have. After that, I was able to install the forks, front wheel, handlebars, cables, and carb vent lines. I also put the rear wheel on but it is just on for balance on the stand as the caliper bracket has a bolt holding the caliper on frozen in it. I have that soaking now in Kroil. It is finally looking like a bike now.

Damn, dude. It is indeed looking like a bike, a great one!

Sorry to hear of the bad luck on it falling off the stand and the kickstart shaft snapping.

Is that the Harbor Freight stand? If so, how do you like it?

Jason, yup it is the HF one. I really like it. More so than the Chaperral one that I have. It is heavy duty for sure. Nice when you have a 20% of coupon. I'm going to get 2 more for the rest of the bike stable.

BTW, the stand had nothing to do with it falling off the stand, the cradle of the frame is a different shape on each side, that's why I had it strapped down to the stand. One of the straps came loose some how.

I went to Harbor Freight tonight. I had looked at the stand at some point in the past. I looked at it again tonight. It looked like $29.99, plus tax normally, but $19.99 for Inside Track Club members. I am not in that.
The platform did not look too big, but the price was cheap, of course. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on it. I will keep it in mind if I get around to committing to more stands.

I have one of the HF steel stands as well. Eight years and still going. No complaints.

Bike it lookin sweet! Sucks about the kicker shaft, glad ya got it fixed! I can't believe it would break like that either.

This past weekend I got the electrics and radiators mounted up. It has spark. Yeah! Hopefully I get this almost finished up this weekend. At the very least hope to have it at least running. I'll post up some pics this weekend of where I'm at.
