dealer says 48 is stock, mines a 42 is seems about right, nice idle 2 turns out with the air screw. think i need to get a fatter needle and they are not available from kawie any more. lean out the main to compensate will see how that works out.

Read up a bit in the jetting section. Same will apply to your 94 as pretty much any KDX200 from 89 up, although 89-94 do like a slightly different needle profile. Don't worry about the stock KAWI needles. Keihin CGK / DGK needles are what you want for an E series carb. I would get both so you can try them and see which one better suits you as they each do feel a little different. For the later H model carb you want CEL or DEL. You will need to jet the carb as well. It's a process, but it's definitely worth it. Again, more info in the jetting section.

thanks JD I think I am close on the main and idle jets, just need to clear up off idle to 1/3. I am impressed with how sensitive this bike is to air screw adjustment. have check the reeds and muffler is good. will get both of the needles you recomend. got another hare scramble coming up need her ready. Re: pwk carb jetting
Both those needles have a little richer profile all around, so you'll need to reduce main and pilot a bit farther, most likely. A richer needle may sound like the last thing you want, but it's just a better profile for your bike than the OEM needle hands down.

ok got some jets. installed 148 main 40 low cgl needle, got in a short ride, so far seems to be an improvement. need a ride her a bit more and fine tune the air screw. still a bit off just off idle but definetly better. by the way it you leave the main jet out a kdx will still run not good but it will get ya around, dont ask how I know, just remeber im 64 Bill

You'd be amazed at how much can be missing/wrong on these bikes and they still runwhc wrote:...by the way it you leave the main jet out a kdx will still run not good but it will get ya around....

hey, Julien D....read your recommedations on needle for 200E...

My '93 came with a Kawi needle...R1172N. Fredette recommends a R1173N...which is a little fatter and leaner. These translate to BGN and BGP.
You are recommending a different taper, diameter and L1. Is that right?

That is correct, but I can't take credit for that discovery. Those who were around the KDX long before me did enough testing to find that the CGK/DGK needles were a great match for the E series KDX. I ran them right up until I swapped in an RB modded carb (which I think is using a DEK, perhaps? Will have to check my notes....), and liked the performance they gave. I think the main reason that the E series likes a different profile than the H series bikes is that they run a different slide cutaway in stock form.bultaco4ever wrote:hey, Julien D....read your recommedations on needle for 200E...

Interesting....I just acquired my '93 and have only ridden it once. But, that was enough to convince me that I needed to do some jetting work. I set the float to the correct position (I think). And I have replaced the main jet and pilot jet with 'new' jets. I'm going by JFR (Jeff Fredette Racing) recommendations for a FMF pipe and put in a 152 main, 48 pilot and I bought a BGP needle (R1173N). I have a 45 pilot ready if it's too rich. He also says be ready with a 155 or 158 main. So, it seems like he's leaning the mixture at low speeds and richening it for high rpms. But, what do I know.
So, new main, pilot and needle and correct float height.....we'll see how it goes. I may have to try your needle ideas. Do you have any pilot and main jet recommendations to go along with your needle idea?

Re: pwk carb jetting
I really don't at all like to throw out specific numbers, since everyone rides different and every bike is different. 152 / 48 is an excellent starting place with the 1173 needle, though. I'd start there and see how it feels to you. If that feels fairly well rounded and you want to try one of the different needles, you'll probably need to go down at least a size on the main and maybe 2 or so on the pilot with the richer needles like CGK/DGK. Once you feel close by seat of the pants testing, I'd definitely make some marks on your throttle grip and go through the jetting guide. Takes an afternoon to do it right, but it's well worth it.

If you forget to tighten the screw's that hold the reeds in place and one falls off, it will just barely get you around.whc wrote:ok got some jets. installed 148 main 40 low cgl needle, got in a short ride, so far seems to be an improvement. need a ride her a bit more and fine tune the air screw. still a bit off just off idle but definetly better. by the way it you leave the main jet out a kdx will still run not good but it will get ya around, dont ask how I know, just remeber im 64 Bill
