1983 KDX 250 Clutch Failure

Post by linny »

Hey Friends,
Still compiling parts before I start on the 200, but me being the Craigslist junkie I stumbled across a 1983 KDX 250 that a guy is trying to part out. When I saw the pics the right engine cover had been removed with what appeared to be an empty clutch basket. He told me that the clutch had some kind of failure and that it actually still ran. I asked him what he wanted for the whole bike and he said to make an offer. I offered him 100$ and have received no response yet.

My questions to you:
What should I be concerned about with clutch failure. My thoughts are the crank went bad (seals etc). The splines might have got chewed up if he was riding it hard in the first place which might have burned up his plates. What else should I worry about. I am hoping a new set of clutch plates (30$ on ebay) may be enough to fix it but was hoping for some input. Thanks,
-Linny

If the covers off take a look at the basket and turn everything by hand make sure it will shift into all N and all gears. Take a look at the old plates too if he still has them laying around sometimes the clutch basket will develop grooves that can hold the plates out and cause them to burn up.
