My New 92

Post by KDW »

I have been after a kdx for a while now and found one that I was able to get an alright deal on with an old XR75 in trade. I have been poking around the site for a couple months before I bought the bike, learning what to look for and what kind of maintenance issues I am going to look forward to. The bike I have is in pretty good shape for a 20+ year old bike, its been ridden for sure but the motor is strong and its pretty solid in the rear end... but it needs new fork seals bad. I gather from my reading that I should replace the springs on these shocks but I am curious if there is a way to tell if it has already been done? yeah they feel soft but they almost spit oil in my face when I am testing them and I only ride street bikes besides a few old twin shock dirt bikes I have owned over the years and really have nothing to compare them to. The bike came with the seals so I am tempted to just change them out and wait to see if I am even able to ride beyond the performance of the shocks before worrying about upgrades. If I can make it to fall I might even do the USD conversion or something for a bit of a project.

Any thoughts?

Nothing wrong with riding and getting used to the bike before making any upgrades. If they are leaking, replacing the seals is important though. Welcome to KDXRIDER!

Thanks for the reply, I got the forks apart today only to find out the fork seals the PO gave me do not fit! So I figured since I am ordering parts anyway and I have these things apart I will just order the springs at the same time. I ordered the 3 rate spring kit, is this the best option? It is supposed to do .40-.46 and the only other option is a .46 spring. I am about 180lbs and pretty green on a long travel dirt bike. Last bike was a 74 DT175!

I am confirming the order tomorrow so any help is appreciated

Where did you find this 3 rate kit? If it's for a KDX, I'd go for it. I weigh in at 160 and use .41 springs, they feel great, but I'm probably a bit faster rider (right now) than you are (right now). The softer springs might be nice (set yours at the .40) for right now and then adjust higher as you need.....If this is possible.

yeah Race Tech makes them but they were back ordered so I just bought some seals from the local dealer to get me going... had a busy weekend might get them installed and out next weekend for a ride. I will will likely try the 3 rate kit in the fall.

If anybody want's to order one. I just used the website and this kit was recommended by a robot so you might want to do more research.

Went out for my first ride this weekend on this bike, what a blast! I followed a 2013 300 xc-w all weekend and we could not find any place this thing wouldn't go. Did some steep climbs, lots of single track, tight woods, rocky accents you name it. Not sure if this is a common problem but the kick start gear doesn't engage sometimes. It sucked to kick it a few times until I caught on to the problem and started kicking lightly till it engaged. It was a PITA if I stalled it on a hill and it wasn't engaging though. I will look at the manual tonight and see how hard it will be to get in there. Gonna need to beef up the suspension though. I might try to find a cheap MX front end if not I will order the race tech spring.
