New Aussie KDX owner

Hi Cliff here from Perth Western Australia.

A few days ago I had the chance to snap up a KDX200 for $500 running fine but rough. A quick test run shows plenty of power, and plenty of leaks both fuel and oil.
Rear shock bounces a LOT. Plate says 10/89 build and quick research tells me the USD forks are not going to be original.
Has a Pro Circuit platinum pipe.
Chassis starts with JKADXNFI2KA E1 or 2?

This site seems to be a great resource for KDX owners.

See my sig for rear shock rebuild. Fairly easy job, about 4/10 on difficulty level. http://www.Racetech.com has a great video tutorial on shock disassambly and reassembly in the "how to" section

10th digit in the VIN is "K" = 1989 E1...See Jason's page

The forks look like KLX...

Also has a steel gas tank, maybe all Aussie KDXs did but from what I knew before only SR models had steel gas tanks

As far as i can work out the Aussie one's are a mixture of the American and SR models,
doing up a 1997 200 myself finding it very confusing sometimes.

Lots of Aussies on here lately!

Most E-series KDX's I've seen in Australia (including my own) had plastic tanks, there was a non-register-able and a register-able (assuming SR) model in the E-series, but only the one model in the H-series.

Fork swap setup is worth half of what you paid for the bike, good buy! :)

I found my forks on ebay already set up for the bike for $30,

cost me $40 to freight them,
sometimes you get lucky.

Just ordered a new shock seal head and bladder, Side covers, rear brake pads, engine seal kit, air filter, side covers and kill switch.

My favorite inspection center is of the opinion that the bike can be road licensed. If that is the case road legal tyres and indicators will be happening soon!

Is the introductions thread ok to continue posting progress in?

Hey mate,

All the H-series (1995+) can be registered in Australia, but some of your model couldn't. Look for a compliance plate on the frame near the steering stem that says it passed Australian Design Rules (ADR). If it can be registered, not sure what the prices are like in WA, but in NSW it's less than half the price per year than a 250.

My opinion is that it can not be registered as it has a vin plate but not an ADR compliance plate. However a workshop where I used to work is a licenced inspection center and the owner there says he can sort it out.

Has to be worth a try.
