polishing KIPS valve "bearings"

Post by newbbewb »

Im a 4 year newbie to E series KIPS. I know the subjects been beaten to a pulp. that said has anyone tried luck with polishing the side valve upper and lower "bearings"? I'll rip it down every year anyways, but after seeing these work for a year(I ride about 120 hours a year) would anyone think it could be a plus? just a thought.... mine are clean and smooth running 40:1, but still, not clean. I keep this thing on the pipe a lot. air filter is always brand new. still some junk. honda HP oil.

No bearings that I know of. Maybe you're referring aluminum collars up top?

polishing KIPS valve "bearings"

Yeah maybe, just don't do what this guy did and add mig welds around the outside of them

He ended up with not just stripped gear teeth but the valve was in three pieces when he got into the motor after a year

There has to be 110 different things you could suggest to keep KIPS valves from eating themselves. I'm pretty sure the two main causes are 1.) bad 2T oil or wrong mix ratios and 2.) people running their KDXs through the woods in high gear at low rpms.

My logic tells me if the KIPS aren't moving open and closed regularly throughout the ride(remember they don't open until 6000 rpm), spooge will build up in the kips ports and dry out after the ride. Sort of like a glue that will works it's way into the mechanisms if not vented regularly by opening them up when you ride!

polishing KIPS valve "bearings"

it's been discussed a few times, the design of the valve was poor to begin with, even with proper oil and maintenance, they get chewed up.
I believe Jason (site admin) fiddled with a support plate for it a while ago. somebody might chime in. if not, do a search for e valve

I don't believe that polishing the collars would have any significant impact as opposed to a good clean.
