E series parts to Hoard?

Post by Keystone »

I'm picking up a new "to me" 1990 E series.
I've been lurking on this thread for some time now and have read several posts on difficult to get replacement parts. Usually, these parts are discontinued and only available on e-bay or through special parts locater services. One such post titled "KIPS Governor Shaft 49114-1067" http://kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=115&t=15206 discusses finding a new KIPS valve.

So, what "hard to find parts" will someone with a E series need to start looking out for as parts become more scarce? It would be nice to put a list of parts together that are now unavailable new or through aftermarket suppliers. Parts that can ONLY be found from used bikes and parts that are likely to fail.

I would stock up on KIPS sub valves and collars.

E series parts to Hoard?

Post by Gotanubike »

In my 8 months owning an E series I know the the water pump shaft, Kips governer shaft, Kips governer rod(the rack running the subvalves pinion gears) and Kips main(center) subvalve are discontinued...left and right subvalves, collars are available though they don't come cheap!

Radiators? They seem like a weak spot on any bike.

The water pump shaft is still available, but it's $50! look up parts for the newest year of the series...ie for an E series look at the 94 parts diagrams.

I do not know if it's a part that you often change, but it seem no longer produced:
CENTER VALVE BUSHING 92028-1616
i'm French and I don't speak English very well, so, please, excuse me :)

Pick up an updated kips main exhaust valve for the e-series. Valve-Exhaust, Center 12005-1157. They are both discontinued but look for the updated version on e-bay, snap one up. But be careful there are 2 different kinds (and very similar) that came in the KDX200 E Series AND they BOTH have the same part# 12005-1157! Original version was replaced with updated version somewhere around 1992. Heres what they both look like.

Original: (used with wave washer)

Updated Replacement: (used without wave washer)

It's just my opinion, but I think the original main exhaust valve was the reason for shredding KIPS subvalves in the E-series. I think the original main exhaust valve didn't fit quite right or had too much play or something that caused binding or too much stress on the subvalves, snapping them or grinding down teeth.
One thing is certain, Kawasaki saw the need for a change. Kawasaki also kept very quiet about the change.

My '89 has the upgraded valve. It had it in it when I bought it. I thought it looked different from the one in the manual. But mine also had a shreaded left hand subvalve, so I don't know if the new design will save the subvalve.

What is #12005-1115 then?

Like I said in the other thread, the parts fiche for 89-91 uses reference 12005/C/D in the diagram. In the list you can find references
"12005 'main'(#12005-1115)" and "12005D 'centre'(#12005-1157)". So it actually has both center valves in the list for 89-91. But nothing in the list for 12005C, that I don't get.

In 92-94, the parts fische changed to only one reference number "12005B(#12005-1157)" and eliminated #12005-115. oh and no wave washer, whatever that is. I never saw one taking my 90 Kips apart

yes, my mistake. The old valve part# is 12005-1115 and with the wave washer, new valve 12005-1157 and without the wave washer. A lot of things I don't get about this center valve.

First of all, why did they make the change? Then, Kawasaki never published the installation instructions for the new valve? To get the new center valve properly lined up is a very different procedure than the service manual. I have the '93 supplement, it's not mentioned - how many shredded kips valves has this caused.
I think this new valve is worth having if you own an e-series. Kawasaki changed the design of this center kips valve for a reason, for whatever reason. My opinion is that something wasn't right with it.
