87 kdx 80 shift problems

Hi, I just purchased a kdx80 for my son. when shifting from 1st to 2nd it always misses, and hits neutral. same thing happens on the way down. Im thinking the springs in the shift mech? if none are broken do they weaken? if anyone has any other suggestions Id like to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

There are a couple springs in there. Another item to check is the input shift fork for wear.

Thank you! Are to referring the mechanism that moves the drum behind the clutch? I intend to crack it open soon. I just bought them new quads, so plates pretty full. I found a deal on this thing, and just couldn't pass it. The guy just put a crank in it , and I'm hoping its a minor reassembly error. I'll post back when I find something. Thank you again
