My son's 93 KDX clutch is giving us problems, the clutch is either engaged or it's not, there is no feathering of the clutch
any thoughts?

Last oil change? You can try going to a different wt or ATF which may help, but if it's a 93 and hasn't had the clutch serviced you should open up the right side and inspect for proper clutch plate thicknesses, basket notching, cable adjustment. Has it always been that way or changed recently?

check the nut that holds the clutch to the bike.

Could the nut be too tight?

You should also check that all the washers are there and in the correct spots. There's one behind the clutch basket with a sleeve on the input shaft(#92200, 92028) that is important for clutch function. And the one between the clutch pack and basket(also #92200)
