Can't get bike to shift into first..?

Hey guys,

I was riding my 95' KDX 200 the other week and towards the end of riding I tried to shift my bike into first..but it just wouldn't shift. It would only stay in neutral. When I tried to push the shift lever down it would hit the skid plate.

I figured my shift lever was broke but I took it off and the threading is fine and there doesn't seem to be any issues. I've tried adjusting the shift lever as well thinking it came undone but it seems to be in the correct position..

I am thinking it is internal and most likely the gear shift shaft assembly that is broken..but not really sure.

Any Ideas?

Also..I COULD get it into second and third but with much effort..I couldn't shift it into third or fourth because my lever would hit the case as well..

I had an 81 KDX with a similar problem. A small piece broke out of the shift drum and caused the shifting fork to hang up in the area of the cam causing hard shifts, popping out of gear and only having use of a couple of gears. No first for sure with mine.

I'm guessing something has gone wrong with your shift drum assembly. I had a 125 KTM that did the same sort of thing. One of the little spring loaded flaps that engage the drum had gotten stuck closed. Probably clutch plate material or some such got into and stuck the mechanism. 20 minute fix.

Or there is a tiny spring that holds the shifter pawl in a forward position.

If it is broken or stretched, the shifter pawl will not engage the shift drum.

It is located at the extreme rear corner of the sidecover.

I just had issue with this the other day.

Turns out..it was just a bent shift lever.

I took off my shift lever bent it and it works fine now.
