Seriously considering building a hybrid and was wondering what all can be used from my KDX (the motor is a given) to reduce the cost of the build?

I'm thinking....

Wheels
Handlebars
Controls

What else?

The cheapest way to go is to get a complete KX. You can then sell the motor outright or if you get lucky and get a KX with a trashed motor, split the cases and sell the pieces on eBay. Otherwise putting a KX together piece by piece can quickly add up.

The wheels don't generally just bolt up. Someone who is more familiar with that can chime in. I used a KDX rear rim, but had to buy a spoke set to get it to work on the KX.

Handlebars and controls aren't insignificant, but would be the least of my worries.

It really depends on the model year of the KX you get.

Basically you can depend on brakes, motor and electrical/ignition and not much else.

2003 KDX 220 complete
2000 KX 125 frame (from a friend)
1998 KX 250 forks
2004 KX 125 forks
1998 KX 125 swingarm
1998 KX 125 rear shock

Been looking for a good deal on a whole KX 125, but all the good deals are older bikes.... and I hate waiting! LOL.

If this is a go..... the KTM 300EXC will have to go.

I watched craigslist for 6 mos and when the deal showed up I jumped. You can use a parts fiche to compare parts to see what is similar and what is different. By the time you have to buy all the parts for th KX you might be better off buying a later model running KX and selling the motor. Where are you located?

Looks like I should hold out for a complete bike even if it means paying a few bucks more than I would like. I can see several advantages! Now if I can just find a decent year....

I bought an 05 KX is showroom condition for $2,100 and sold the motor and ignition for $930.

The build was simple with a complete KX.

OK...

So I picked up this 1999 KX125 for $900 today, so the project begins!

On edit... that is my youngest boy on this bike and future "big dirtbike rider" .... he tells me that everyday!

And a pick of the donor... 2003 KDX 220 to the left . When i get going on this I will log a thread.

Looks like you've got some good bikes to work with. You'll have a fun time with this project.

Let the fun begin. Mine has taken me about 60 hrs to complete all of the fabrication and misc. work. andit is complete except for teardown and paint
