So I'm looking at http://www.babbittsonline.com/pages/par ... asaki.aspx for a countershaft seal for my 1984 KDX200A2. What's odd is, there _seem_ to be 2 different ones listed:

The diagram shows a countershaft seal with the annotation "92049A/B", and the parts list has

92049A SKU: 92050-013 OIL SEAL SC25376 1 $5.61
92049B SKU: 92050-033 OIL SEAL TB3040 1 $7.67

Also on the diagram and parts list are 92049 (diagram shows this as a crank seal):

92049 SKU: 92049-1068 SEAL-OIL,TBJ25407 2 $7.27

The diagram also shows 92049C as the shift seal:

92049C SKU: 92051-005 OIL SEAL,TB13225.5 1 $3.10

I'm sure there's some method to this system, but I don't understand it. Aside from the general puzzlement (using the same number, with letter suffixes, for many oil seals of different sizes), which of "92049A" or "92049B" should I order for my bike? Both? If "B" is a supersede of "A", shouldn't "A" be dropped from the list? How would I know?

OK, the site/URL in my first post was offering incomplete information. At http://www.kawasaki.com/ the parts diagram is the same but the parts list includes a matrix showing which parts are needed for which model (in my case, A1 uses the "A" part, and A2 and A3 use the "B" part).

Excerpting the most interesting section:

4. How the part numbers work

Kawasaki part numbers consist of two sets of numbers;

* First, 5 digits to indicate the function.
* Second, 3 or 4 digits which are pretty random but in some kind of chronological order. EG a brake lever for my 1978 Z650 is 46092-1002; part 46092-1117 is a brake lever fitting about a dozen models starting in 1984.

Note that just occasionally, the digits indicating the function will change. This generally only happens when you go from some of the very oldest models, or when a part changes significantly (for example, levers with the adjusting dial are generally 13236-something). There doesn't seem to be any kind of sequence to the numbering system for function that I've been able to determine !

So I guess _all_ Kawasaki oil seals are numbered 92049 after all! Or something like that...

A side note...if your bike is an SR model, make sure you are NOT looking at a fiche for the US models.

Any oil seals I recall are indeed 92049-something.

Anyway....you answered your own question. The A/B part indeed means there are different applications within the model listing..and the specific part will be noted in the listing..NOT the diagram.
