Bike bailed on me!

Hey All

It's been a long time since I have posted. I've been riding a lot with my 11 year old son and the bike has been perfect until today. We were riding in an desert that includes a large pit. I went into the pit and just as I was exiting my bike revved like it was wide open. Problem was I had the throttle closed. I did a wonderful 50 ft wheelie before looping and landing on my 45 year old a&^.

I had my 88 do the same thing when I ran out of gas. Kind of went into diesel mode or something. When I collected myself and looked at the 04 kdx the fuel filter was full and she started up normal.

My bike is setup as follows. RB head mod, carb mod. Wiseco piston. V Force III Reed Cage. 42 pilot, 155 main. CEK needle third clip. 1/3 av gas, a hint of toluene and premium unleaded. Bent back fender........
Temp today was about 95.

This is the first time my bike has hicuped in 2500 miles. Anyone else had this happen?

Thanks
David

Check the carb boot... may have been sucking air....

Sounds like it ran out of gas. I know the filter was filled with fuel and you had gas in the tank, but it could have been a clogged main jet. The jarring action could have bumped it loose. Might be a good idea to tear down the carb. and flush all the passage ways with some carb cleaner just to blast out any debris.

I've had my throttle do that from dirt getting down the throttle cable and into the slide, jambing it. Throttle off but the slide stuck up there in the carb body a ways.

Also, I've heard of KX500's doing this. Imagine what happened to you on a KX500!!!

That's all I can think of. Maybe someone else has some other ideas. BTW, good to hear from you. Did the kid like the show you put on?

I now remember why the KX500's did this; they had a carb body that would warp when hot. Imagine that!!

Hey Guys

Hi Ski. Good to hear from you also. It's been a while.

Thanks for the tips guys. I think that I simply ran out of gas. I pulled the carb and it looked fine. I cleaned it out very well just in case.

The boot is fine also.

Yea, my Son said, "cool Dad, how come you stoppped".

Can imagine a run away KX 500. The KDX was scary enough!

Re: '..cleaned it out..'

Including the float needle and seat?

Take the clip off the cap tube. Check the cable for fraying.

Just because the throttle was closed doesn't mean the slide was down. You could probably feel the difference if you had some time to play with it..and that time probably wasn't when your backside was in the process of getting grounded.
