Anyone know why the cost of the Wiseco piston kit for the KDX220 shot up so dramatically? One day the price was like $85.00, the very next morning it's like $108.00 or so. Why..........

WHY?
Because they read this forum!
Where did you saw such prices? Do you have acces to officials wiseco price lists?

I found the same thing.
Locally they wanted 135 and I was told the same story then called Jeff
at Monkeybutt and he said the same thing but he was 104 or something like that.
I figured after a year of hard riding mine could use a set of rings and figured why not replace the piston at the same time.
What a waste of time and money. The piston was barely worn and the
ring gap was only .016 which is .006 larger than when I put them in.
Should spent the money on beer or something useful like that.

Cuz I was going to order one when the price was lower, but didn't because it was late and needed to sleep. Went to order the following morning and woke up to a big surprise. Ordered it anyways.

My local dirt bike shop owner says Wiseco had changed manufacturers recently. Allegedly quality has gone down and the prices have gone up. He likes the Athena pistons. I can't confirm it, but he says a lot of the motocross pros have switched to Athena.

I did notice the piston was slightly different in design where the pin goes in.
Harder to put the clip in also.

From experience with Wiseco's or just a general observation?
To me ... it sounds like typical KTM hype on the Athena piston. If KTM runs them...they must be double **** dipped!

I noticed some differences too between the stock and wiseco, mainly the size and number of oiling holes: there are less of them and they were a bit smaller. Figured it was fine since nobody even mentioned anything.

WRONG, KTM's come from the factory with Vertex pistons.
Athena pistons (made by Wossner) are super high quality pistons, i would much rather have one than a Wiseco. Back in the day, Wiseco was my go to piston, but they're quality control isnt what it used to be. I currently run an Athena in my KTM. I won't touch Wiseco pistons, i know too many people who have had failures with them.
Don't be double dipping my Athena and KTM's in ****

.016" is pretty large, ain't it?
Keep in mind the pin-to-crown heighth difference (Athenas are tall). I know that 'cuz someone that DOES know that said so.

I never said athena made a piston for KDX's or one of them would fit. Just saying that they are great pistons, better than wiseco imo.

They DO make one for KDX's. I'm going to put one in my 2000 220....If I ever get the rest of my parts from Kawasaki! Who knows of the best source of OEM parts with good and fast service? So far all I've managed to get is slow and slower.

India, the side of the piston is the same as in your E-Bay pic but the
dome is the same as the old design, doesn't look like the E-bay one.
I wonder if the piston show is just a generic pic ??
I shoulda took a pic.
CC, you think .016 is worn ? I think the spec when installing it was
.004 end gap per inch and ended up at .010
Is this even a good way to check ring wear ?
One good thing was there was no indication of blow by on this piston compared to the OE piston
OE
Weisco 1 season

You'll have the best dirtbike piston avail. imo. Wossner (Athena) makes some high quality stuff.
