Hi,
Im looking at doing a USD fork conversion on a 87 KDX200. Are the forks from a '91 model suitable?
Will there be any machining work necessary to complete the job?
Also, how much roughly will this mod cost if i use second hand parts?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Mike, any KX USD forks would work with the appropriate machine work. Generally speaking the newer the better. My 96 fork conversion cost me about $150 when it was all said and done. Some people do it for more, some for less. It just depends how patient (and lucky) you are on ebay.
However you will be the first person that I know of who has attempted the fork conversion on a pre 89 KDX. So you are in uncharted territory! But don't let that stop you, I think it would be a pretty sweet. Thing I would check out is the front end height before and after the mod to make sure your not riding around nose high. The other approach you could take is trying to source an entire KX rolling chassis and fit your motor into it. Modern ergo's with air cooled lightness and reliablity! That would be a nice combo.
Keep us posted!

Keep us up on it. I've wondered if it would make a big difference in handling on my 86. Good luck.
