hey all just a question:

when i was preparing to loob the chain on my 220 somthing kinda funny happened..
i had the bike jacked up and started the bike. i then pulled the clutch and dropped the bike into first gear. as soon as i putt my bike into to first gear the back wheel began to spin even with the clutch in. is this because the clutch is not being fully activated? if so how could i fix it? or is the bike in need of a new clutch all together?

guys the clutch is pulled in but the wheel was still spinning you sure it is supposed to?

What you're describing is called clutch drag. The KDX is famous for it. When the bike is on the ground it probably lurches, and idle drops when you put it in gear? Well, at that point the clutch is actually slipping ever so slightly. When you pick the bike up as in your example you see it engage. It's a tough wet clutch, and is nothing to worry about. What it boils down to is the actuating assembly for the clutch is a bad design.

No one else said anything so maybe everyone does it like that, but...

Running the bike on a stand to lube the chain? Wow, that sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

Why not just lean the bike over while on the kickstand and spin the tire by hand??

Indeed. Put bike on center stand in neutral, and spin the rear tire by hand.

Enough safe and sane we NEED more danger here!! I wouldn't lube the chain like that but I don't see it harming anything on the bike and unless you are careless you will keep all your fingers.

I've pinched a finger pretty good just rotating the back wheel by hand, can't imagine what damage I could do with it in first.

actually i take alot of percautions when doing it lol and when your doing it by your self it makes it much easier but yeah lol

I start my bike, and with chain lube can in hand - pointed in the general direction of the chain - I tilt the rear wheel off the ground via the kickstand. I drop her in first and lube away, works great!! I think it's safer than spinning the rear wheel 'cause I don't have to touch anything that's spinning.

What kind'a bike does your Dad have?

I'm curious what bike has NO clutch drag.....

Well...BMWs with dry clutches I suppose don't drag much...

A BTW...this chain spraying event (motor driven or not) DOES take place on the INside of the chain, right?

NOT on the OUTside of the chain, say, on the back of the rear sprocket?

LOL CC you got me man, I kinda do both, a little on the outside then a little on the inside, now that I think of it, why would one lube the outside of the chain???

Because that is the easiest access. Doesn't do much good...but it's easy!

But...centrifigal force is not your friend in such a case.

A chain should be lubricated on the inner circumference. Then..centrifigal force IS your friend!!

I direct the spray down on top of the chain - to the inside of the chain walls - where the chain is returning to the C/S as it's spinning, giving it a good going over to make sure it works it way to the insides of both chain walls. Perhaps a bit wasteful but it seems to work best I can tell. And it's quick and easy.
