When i go really hard on my clutch it make a wierd noise almost like a very faint squeek like what you would hear on the inside of a car when your brakes are squeeking is this clutch basket or clutch plate problems?

Are you shifting at the time?

IF it's like a growling type noise, that is normal. At least every KDX I abused a clutch on made that noise. In fact, every kawasaki dirtbike I clutched hard did too.

Clutch squeal is as common as the ever present poisonous (and thank GOD now regulated by The Government!) gas, CO2.

If what you hear is only faint...you obviously have a LONG way to go to be 'rough' on your clutch...so don't worry about it.

FWIW: My OEM clutch squealed. My OEM clutch with aftermarket springs squealed. My OEM steels with new friction plates (Vesrah XR400) squealed.

It HASN'T squealed of late..something I wondered about when it stopped happening, not just brought to mind now.

Now THAT may be something to worry about!!

Maybe that fancy clutch basket makes a difference CC.

The squealing stopped before the basket swap....

Its not that faint its loud enough to be heard in my helmet over the engine reving quite high but its a 94 and possibly the plates are worn out?

Yes, that is certainly possible.

You can imagine the kinds of noises possible when quickly spinning things are smashed against held still things...exactly as the brake situation you mentioned.

Just 'cuz mine made noises when it was in good shape doesn't mean noises don't mean anything.

IF this is a new noise, then I'd certainly question the need for plates..and maybe more than that...steels and springs, too.

Oil can/will cause that, too.

New oil type? Anything new in that regard?

Not a big deal to check it.

Well, if you've never been into a clutch before, it may be fun!!

Take it apart and see what you find. You will be looking for specific thicknesses as based on spec in the book.

That is problematic as I recall...'cuz NEW clutch parts FROM the dealer didn't meet spec!

The steel plates should not be warped..have no 'blue' streaks that indicate heat damage. The friction plates shouldn't be glazed, their fingers/tabs shouldn't be damaged.

If your basket is damaged (notched), now would be a good time to fix that...

If you need plates...FRP sells the XR400 Vesrah pieces. Much more friction material...the choice of champions!
