Cycra barkbuster install, stupid question

My new Cycra barkbusters (no triple clamp mounting) mated to my handlebars beautifully with no bending required!! Nice change of pace from my old Fredette handguards.

One problem; the little aluminum bar-ends (small knurled aluminum cylinder cut diagonally into two pieces) just spin in the bar when I tighten them.

No instructions came with the guards (they were repackaged from a previous buyer) so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Can anyone help me with this? Is there a special way to install those bar ends? I can always "punt" and hammer a nut into the bar end like before, but I wanted to try the "correct" technique first.

Thanks!

Get them close before inserting...that way they grab....

Also, check the threads on each bolt to make sure that they go in easy, past where they were mounted before on the old bars. Sometimes the threads will distort.

I just got my Fredette hand savers yesterday, I did a little horse trading with him. I too tried hammering that nut inside my aluminum bars, it did not take long to realize it just would not go. I guess I just need a smaller 5/16 nut that will fit inside the bars? How come you switched brands if you don't mind me asking?

I broke the Fredette guards!

My old handlebars were bent, so I got some Renthal RC-High bend bars to replace them. My old Fredette guards wouldn't mate up with those new bars, so I put one of them in a vise to start the "custom fitting" process. The barkbuster snapped along one of the holes I had drilled for the plastic shield.

A local shop had a pack of MSR "Hard Parts" barkbusters with green shields at a great discount ($65). Upon closer inspection all of the parts were clearly Cycra, as the words "Cycra Patented Probend" was stamped on both aluminum bars. The fit of these things is GREAT and no bending was required.

As for the bar ends, both ends are touching when I insert them into the bar end.

Are those "bar ends" supposed to slide into the bar easily? I had already knocked a nut into the handlebars for the Fredette guards, so the inner diameter is a little wallowed out now.

I tried to find a smaller nut to fit inside my bars, no luck so I ground off the edges of the nut and it fit right in :supz:

Regarding the Fredette BB. Place the end into the bar, loosely mount the BB Bar Mounts & mark where they line correctly. Then drill a NEW HOLE & Viola...They mate up perfectly...Billet does not bend much, but breaks real good.

I had no problem with the nut Fredette supplied with the BBs. When I wanted to reinstall them with new bars, I took the hex head bolt (for the bar end) to Lowe's and found a matching nut, and it too went into the bars with some banging.

I love the way these Cycras are mounting...all I need to do is get the aluminum bar ends to bite to the inside of the bar.

A guy at Cycra said to hold the BB in your hand, insert the hex head bolt through the BB and into the bar end pieces, and snug them up so that the bar end pieces overlap enough to touch the insides of the bar. Then, push that assembly into the bar end and loosely attach the clamp near the crossbar. Snug things up so the BB won't droop, then check the positioning of everything before tightening down. I'll try it out after work.

You do have aluminum bars right? Stock are steel IIRC and you need different (rubber) inserts from Cycra. My Cycras fit fine into my 7/8 aluminum bars. The mounts themselves are a diff story. I dropped the bike once and the fall bent one of the bolts that holds the barkbuster onto the mount. I was surprised. Reassembling one of the small bolts that holds the mount onto the bar stripped the thread of the mount. Steel into aluminum is always fun.

I was thinking the same thing. If the Renthals are not aluminum, you need the bar ends with rubber tubing on them.
