Not sure what it is like in your state but I would guess that the original owner never paid the sales tax on the bike. Therefore they could not get the title in their name. Hopefully it is not stolen. You may be able to do a title search or apply for a lost title through the D.O.R. Yes, you may be kind of screwed. In Mo. you would have to pay off the original sales tax and the late penalties. That might end up being more than you paid for the bike.

Did he give you a bill of sale? Maybe if you had that, you could insure it with the vin #. I dunno.

Titles exist for any motorized vehicle in any state I've ever dealt with. Maybe registration isn't required, but titles certainly are.

Your situation will depend on the laws in your state. Whether it's application for lost title, new title or whatever other name applicable, it's probably something that can be done.

Whether it's reasonable to do so (the mention of sales tax, penalties and all) is what you will find out in the process.

Good luck!

I've insured dirt bikes without a title in the past in Montana and Idaho (liability insurance.)

MSO for a new bike or Bill of Sale for a used bike goes into the insurance record file with a picture of the bike and the VIN numbers from the frame and engine. I'm expect that State Farm Insurance also runs a stolen vehicle check also on the bike numbers.

The last few bikes I've bought I've just got the MSO. In Oregon you just need a Vin# to get your off road sticker. But when I got Insurance (lia. & theft) for my race bikes my Insurance co. required a Title.

Take your "Bill of Sale" to DMV and ask for a title search and have it put in your name. Make sure you have that bill of sale or get it before you go to DMV just in case the bike rightfully belongs to someone else,,,,,,,as in HOT! They will take the bike from you if it's a stolen bike. With the BOS you'll have some right to get your money back from who you bought it from.

Call Kawasaki. For $50, they will send you a NEW Certificate of Origin.
