I bet this has been asked before but somebody has to add to the F of FAQ.

The water drain on the bottom of the airbox looks kind of shaky to me.
I can't imagine it would keep water out of the airbox on a long water crossing.

I seem to recall reading about a better replacement from another bike on here. Anybody remember that?

I think I've read just abou EVERY post in this place and can't recall that.

Let me rephrase the question:

The drain valve on the bottom of the typical KDX airbox doesn't look like it would do a very good job of keeping water out of the airbox on a long and/or deep water crossing.

Does anyone know of a better one, perhaps from a different bike?
(my old XR400 had a different style, kind of a pinched tube look to it. I don't know if it would fit)

The reason I ask is I have a race coming up that usually has some pretty tough water crossings. Many guys don't make it. Last year I took no chances and got off the bike and sort of walked it across, motor running and working the clutch. I almost didn't make, the motor was sputtering quite a bit for a couple miles down the trail. Lots of guys were wringing out air cleaners and flipping bikes over to pour water out.


Any ideas?

More seriously...don't have a clue. I actually thought this was to get the dirt OUT of the air box (reason why it's so loose), never thought about this being an issue for water crossing...
This may sound dumb but can you plug it for the race?

Last year the water was about mid thigh, halfway up the side covers. I was on the downstream side pushing the bike against the current. They had put chain link fence in the bottom of the stream so traction wasn't bad. We ended up coming out about 30 yards below where we went in. The stream bank on exit was the real problem, a lot of people dropped it there. They had some course workers spotting people coming out and I got a good one who just jerked me and the bike up the bank.

I know I got water in my airbox, whether through that valve or from under the seat I don't know.

I got an 02 XR2fiddy so I'll check in a couple of hours, oh that reminds me I need to get an air filter cage pic for someone too.

I clean the box real good and Duct tape it from the outside.
If I drowned out,I rip the tape off and go through Revival processes
Twice I had Grit / Sand make its way through the stock drain and get between the Carb wall and the slide,
randomly sticking the throttle and causing me
To Jam the back break on to kill the engine (And save some tree bark)
I DNF'ed both of those races .
So I tape it SHUT.

I highly disagree. I bought mine used without the plug at the bottom, and after a few months of muddy, wet conditions riding, the air box kept getting nasty. Worse than any air bix i've ever seen. Finally i plugged it up and all was well. It keeps crap out of your filter.

Do you have your airbox lid installed ?? Without it they get much dirtier than with a lid in place. I find it strange that the small opening at the bottom would be to blame. If you go through water crossings how is the water meant to escape ??

I've had my bike way past that bottom drain...with the OEM stopper..no problem.

My Yamaha has the same fitting, and the same situation...been in water way past the 'plug' and it's never sucked in a drop.

Put some waterproof grease on it if you're worried about it.

That is not to gainsay anyone's experience otherwise.

I assume you DO have the spring clip attached?

The parts diagram show part # 49006, and that is what I have on there.

Likely I am mistaken, as I have more machines around with the pictured setup (#28) than others...but I thought my KDX had a similar clip.

I'll have to take a gander tonight.

Clip or not, it's never leaked..and it's sure been under water!

Now that airbox looks like it is out of one of them there cursed, single track ruining, 'I can't go the right way and have to knock trees down', wallowing in a mudhole quads.

The valve on the bottom of my airbox is bulbous, with four slits in it. It looks kind of like a flower bulb about to open

The one shown in the picture above looks like the one off my old XR400. I always thought it was pretty effective; I don't think the one on my KDX is nearly as effective.

Back to the question at hand: does any one know of one like the one pictured above that fits the KDX airbox?

Any clear tubing stuff would do. Get a piece that fits (most hardware stores I would presume..haven't looked myself. Maybe from a pet supply? For an aquarium?), close one end however suits 'ya (the one shown is heat sealed), get a clip to fit.


No wallering in the mud for MY Banshee! Nothin' but sand..well and the occasional water crossing. Actually, this past weekend they weren't so 'occasional'. More like miles of 'em.

I'll see if the 02 XR250 crimped plug will work this weekend on my KDX for you guys.

That plug is not crimped shut.

While the end may be flattened it is not sealed.

If one were to squeeze that the long way the 'lips' would open.
