There are quite a few places to ride in this area. Here are brief descriptions of a couple.
John's Peak
This has been a riding area for decades. A mix of city government, MRA (MotorcycleRiderAssoc), BLM and locally owned (largely timber products companies) lands, this area has pretty much anything you want. Whether it's 48" width quad-able (that doesn't mean easy!) routes or single track there are miles and miles of trails in this area. It is open year-round except during extreme fire danger during the summer. That designation depends a WHOLE lot on weather, of course. Fire restrictions have been invoked as early as June and may last through October. More likely to be later August thru September.
This riding area is going to be pretty much disappearing real soon. BLM is overdue now on its EIS that will regulate riding in most of the area to 'closed unless posted open.' It is destined to be a 'managed' riding area. You know what that means...NO riding MOST places. I will guar-an-damn-tee you that a whole lot of riders will ignore the whole thing. No way the gov'mint is going to keep riders out with a sign that says 'closed.' But, be aware that in a very short time, this terrific riding area won't be 'legally' available anymore.
Better make it down here now!!!!
Elevations run from 17-4500'.
Prospect OHV system
This is in the Rogue/Siskiyou National Forest. There are hundreds of miles of trails/shared use road routes in this system. It generally opens the first part of July, closes for hunting season (Sep or Oct for a couple week?), then may well re-open, weather conditions permitting. You can count on most upper el. trails being blocked by snow until at least mid-July.
Most of the trails in this area are perfect for a quad..made with a SWECO (a trail building machine). There are a few single track trails...but not many. It is beautiful to ride..lots of nice views. A common route for us duing a riding day will run about 140 miles. We stash fuel 1/2 way through (along with some refreshment and lunch) the loop...ride all day!! There is not a single (one) track that you could consider at all 'expert' in tech...not close..but it's a lot of fun anyway.
Elevations run from 25-6500'el.

There are some .org type websites that have completely erroneous (uh...wrong?) information regarding access to these riding areas. If you are serious about coming down, don't hesitate to contact me.
