Air Cooled KDX vs Water Cooled KDX

Aside from not having to worry about a radiator and the
lighter weight of an air cooled KDX, how is the water cooled version different in terms of performance, reliability, shocks, etc...
I have never rode one of the water cooled ones.

It is a noticeable step up on almost every area.
I had a 1987 since new and got a used 1994 in 2002. It was quickly noticeable.

Yeah, better suspension, more travel, slightly higher compression and water cooling to keep temps stable so performance is enhanced. Redesigned power valve, and disc brakes front/rear. All for the same weight.

I used to ride air cooled 86 and currently have water cooled 89sr. Pros of water cooled already mentioned so I can add one niche pro of air cooled.
If you happen to need to idle a lot, wait around with engine running but not moving and very slow riding, in hot AND dry still air, the air cooled will out perform the water cooled.
the air cooled will potter along in the heat, rough but still run, while the water cooled will struggle and need some speed through the radiator to cool it down.
I also liked the drum rear brake. It was enough brake and never had to worry about lines being banged or bleeding it. My current rear disc is bent and it gives chatter. Never happened with the drums nor had to worry about it.

Discs still work in soupy mud. I’m happy to have left drum brakes behind.

I ride the drum a lot on the '86. Can't do that with the disc.

You're welcome. Parts availability is another difference. The newer, the better.
