Thanks to this website I finally made up my mind and picked up this kdx20 for $1300. The bike ran great and I was able to run through all the gears. Unfortunately after the test ride I decided to start it again and the lever snapped. I was really planning on take this bike out on Sunday, maybe I can weld the lever and use it tomorrow?

The guy I bought it from didn't use it much, and didn't know what had been done to it. Not sure If I can believe him or not, but he said he had a max of 4 hours ride time on it. I pulled the seat and found a lot of spare levers, bolts, tow strap and other goodies. The filter was clean too. The current owner had no idea all that stuff was in there, so I know he never cleaned the filter. He does not know if the top end has been changed. With all of the mods I'm pretty sure the top end has been done, but I won't take the risk.

Can anyone identify this carb, how can I tell if it's real or not? The number stamped on the body is PKW 665a2 BAE.

Is this a Clarke desert tank? It has a Clarke cap, but I'm not sure about the tank.

Lot's of other mods too, but I'm familiar with most of them.

Here's one more pick of the carb.

Carb appears to be a true PWK quad vent, has a serial number and the right colored hoses, you could pull it and inspect the jets to make sure, Keihin jets are stamped, fakes are not. Looks to be a Clarke 3.6 gal tank, should be a part# 11483 on it somewhere if it is. VForce reeds, aftermarket pipe, sprocket, bark busters, bars, even still has the original tool bag. Looks to be a bike in excellent condition for $1300...smh around here it would go for $3k+. Some people have all the luck.

Where did the kickstart lever break at? It can be welded, and there are a few threads on here about building a hybrid kicker using a shorter KX lever.

I'm not a welder, but I do own one. Not sure if I trust this, but I REALLY want to ride tomorrow. it broke at the hole where the ball and spring go in. 2/3 -3/4th of the hole is ok, and the set screw will stay in.

So now I'm pretty sure the bike has had a top end job. The guys gave me a box of parts and I found what looks like a used wrist pin and small end bearing in a Wossner bag. Does anyone know an Andy Willson from this site? His name is all over the parts.

That ball and spring are the detent to keep the lever from rotating out while you ride. did you weld the set screw in with the ball and spring in there? If so you should be fine. If not you can always rig a bit of bungie cord to hold the lever in. Either way, GO RIDE!

I was still able to thread in the ball spring and set screw after I welded it.

If possible, route the gas tank vent line down into the frame neck under the bar pad and replace the carb fuel line. Pull the fuel filter out and just put in a continuous fuel line from the fuel tank petcock to the carb inlet.

If the kickstart fails, you could always push start it to temporarily ride until you get it corrected. Just don't stall it in a bad place to then have to jump start it.

Yeah I hear those filters can strain the oil out of your premix

In case OP was not aware, there is a screen on the petcock in stock form.

I'll make sure to remove the filter. The carb turned out to be an RB carb. I have the stock one too.

THAT is a great mod!
Once your kick starter either breaks or wears so much it is hard to kick, and it will, you might consider going to the KX125 mod kicker. You'll see threads on it in these forums.

SCORE!!!!!!!! That's awesome on the RB carb. May want to open it up just to verify all the goodies are there on the inside and someone didn't just use the RB carb body. Looks like you found a great candidate for a longtime love affair :)

Man!! makes me wonder if the suspension has had a little work done. Replace those tires and tubes but you made a heck of a buy. Congrats!

We'll I never replaced that "temporarily" fixed kick starter and it finally let go. I felt like such an idiot. I was deep into a canyon that was mostly soccer/Mellon sized rocks. I put it in 2nd gear and somehow got a burst of speed as I pushed it over the rocks and bump started it back to life! I love this bike and would never have been able to do that with my old bike.

Congratulations on getting it out of there! That could have been bad.
