Horrible residue!

Ok so getting an 87 running again. Gas was left in tank and now separated. Got the tank clear, but the sticky residue left is awful I’ve tried gas, mineral spirits, WD-40, ???

This is inside the tank?
Did you take the petcock off?
Is the tank off the bike?

Yes, tank is off the bike. Fortunately, only made it to petcock and no further! Carb was spared!

I'd try carb cleaner.
If you have a small airport nearby, 100LL aviation gas is a darn good cleaner too.

dryer vent brush is fexible
put some nuts or washers in the tank and slosh them around with water?

Ok. I’ll try these methods!
