What's up guys. Pretty informative forum we have here. I just picked up a 04 220r. I bought it not running and in need of a top end. To my surprise it has a few go fast parts already on it. Bored and polished carb, wer stabilizer, fmf pipe etc.
What pistons do you guys recommend? Oem, wisco or?

Everyone seems to recommend wiseco. Apparently the stockers self destruct on the 220's from what i've gathered.

What ever you do, do not use an oem piston....Wosner, Wiseco, Vertex and Pro-X are all good brands. If you need a replate, be sure to buy a piston from the plater, or at least ship the new one with the cylinder.

Like already stated, anything but an OEM cast piston. Wiseco is good. I've used them many times with good results. However, I prefer the newer offerings (Athena, Vertex, etc) with an anti-friction coating on the skirts. The coating helps the longevity of the piston and your cylinders plating.

Looks like wiseco it is. Thanks for the info. Here's a pic of the piston.
The top end was already torn down when I picked up the bike. On the plus the bottom end is in good shape. The PO even gave me a kawasaki service manual. The cylinder definitely needs a replate or replaced. I'd be further ahead to find a complete cylinder with all the power valve parts as I'm missing the left valve and bushing. Supposed they were seized in the cylinder.
I've found a used complete cylinder with all the power valve parts. It needs a replate also. Tho I think they may be asking to much.

I would definitely check out the crankshaft and bearings. The piston looks like it is missing a chunk. I would also assume the head looks like a grenade went off. That little piece bouncing around would cause a lot of damage.

I thought the same but I don't believe that chunk came off all at one time. There are zero marks on the head. Just a thin layer of carbon. Crank bearing are smooth and have no play. Rod bearings are smooth with no play. I believe the piston was used long after it's service life and may have been a touch on the lean side.

Wow. Ususally these threads turn into the "Shrapnel Show". Good for this one it did not.

I see. No shrapnel yet... I believe the PO really took pride in the bike until this happened. Its been apart for awhile by the smell of the fuel tank.
Carb work looks great. I've measured it at 36mm. I don't know anything about this mod on this bike. I haven't open the bowl yet to check jetting.

Does he not install socket screws for the bowl? Those look like stock JIS screws.

I placed an add in the wanted section for the 2 power valve parts I need. Doesn't look like that section gets to much attention. The posts seem to be older.

When I bought a brand new RB carb it came with the standard bowl screws. The socket screws are a $7 option for his carbs. The pic above looks like both RB carbs I have owned.
