Here to ask the pros. Is cracked intake bridges "common" in these bikes? Sent my stock 93 200 for a replate to a company (possibly to be named soon) I have used several times in the past.
Originally I was going to purchase my piston from them. Looked on line and found the same piston for $20+ cheaper. I called the day after I receive an email that my cylinder arrived to let tbem know I will buy the piston elsewhere, just finish the cylinder to oem spec.
After a month, they called for payment. $50 more than a strip and replate to weld a cracked intake. Did I just get screwed because I told them they are too expensive on the piston?
I did not notice any cracking on my inspection before sending it out. Wasn't really looking for it either.


I don't want to blast a company on a forum if they did their job properly. But searching, I did not find any references to this "common" problem. Had my k5 (known for cracked bridges) cylinder done by the same company last year and no welding......but I bought my piston from said company at the time of service.

Did I get taxed for calling them out on their piston price?

I would say that is very uncommon.

I agree about that not being a common problem, but it doesnt mean it cant happen once in a while.

What I do think is very common is for customers to NOT buy their piston from the replating companies for the reason you mentioned. I really dont think that they were trying to get additional money out of you because you didnt buy a piston from them.

I always send a piston with the cylinder and have never been charged for more than the standard replate.

I think you should have checked it before you sent it. Hard to say without that.

That's why I am not really upset. I actually did some scrubbing before deciding on the replate. Only reason I sent it was a small chip in the plating. Whatever. Will be here on Thursday.

Would think they contact the customer when additional $$ is involved to ransome the cylinder back. Let you know before they perform upcharges.

Also makes me suspicious that the tech told me "Thats a common problem on these kdx200 cylinders".

Might look outside Pennsylvania for my future plating needs. Unfortunate, used the same place several times and always had been very impressed.

You said you used this company many times before with excellent results, I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

I agree I would have appreciated notification that they found a crack, but I wouldn't worry about it... You've gotten good results in the past... Put in the new top end and go enjoy your bike

I've seen that on several intakes , it's more of a casting flaw in my mind.
I think they did you a favor to fix it and would be glad they did.

The piston supplied or not had nothing to do with this.

So the cylinder showed up yesterday. Found a small area with some grinding. Reed side of the left bridge. Other than that, it looked....as they always do. Perfect.

Lady caught me off guard. Woke me up (currently working nights). Put me in a mood I guess.

Powerseal still kicks ass.

Speaking of cracks:



It's little, but it's there - just by the main exhaust valve.
How big of a deal is this? I had it open to replace the kips with BDK..
