1999 KDX200 no spark

Post by sanso18 »

Hey all, prepare for a long post!

I was recently riding my bike in the woods and it felt just like I fouled a spark plug. I changed the plug out for a new one and still no spark. After pushing the bike home(killer) i tried 3 other new plugs and still no joy.

Nothing has changed out of the normal conditions. I've been riding this bike for 2 years and I've been using the same BR8ES plugs. I regularly clean the carb and do regular maintenace so the bike is in good shape. In other words everything was normal and then it ceased to be normal.

Here's what I've done so far.
First I searched through the posts on this site for quite a few hours to see how to check stuff. I got confused pretty quick because either posts were contradicting or I didn't understand the lingo. I am NOT good at electrical stuff.
Second I took my multi meter and started trying the things that I read about. Here's what I came up with
1. I checked for ohms on the ignition coil. I has continuity and NO resistance from blue wire going into coil to ground. It has continuity and .03 OHMs from end of HT wire to ground(plug boot removed)
2. I checked plug boot. It has continuity and 4.6 OHMs
3. I checked ignition source coil in stator. It has continuity and 320 OHMs from white/red wire to ground. I had buddy use electric drill on rotor nut to spin it and I only get 3.3 volts out of white/red wire. It is enough to make you jump tho if you hold on to it. It's a sharp pulsing voltage.
I have no idea how to check the CDI and I ignored the lighting coil and voltage regulator because I'm assuming they aren't involved. On that note the lights have all been removed.

I have checked all wires for continuity and they all seem fine. I have cleaned all connections. I pulled off stator plate and cleaned the connections but they had zero rust. I cleaned ignition coil mounts and trimmed back the HT wire.

Is there more I can do to check things?
Do any of these numbers seem off?
Please use easy terms! LOL

Thanks guys! :supz:

i forgot to mention that i tested the kill switch and it is working fine.

Thanks for the link Jaguar, maybe my 3.3 volts from the ignition source is to low? The article you shared says it should be 30 volts. But my OHMs are within spec.

I would do the simple stuff first, like take off the tank and seat and check all connections. Make sure something hasn't come unplugged and if there is corrosion. Check for a wire that might have grounded out because the insulation was rubbed off, or maybe a wire that is broken inside the insulation where you can't see it, check for continuity.
