KDX Not Revving UNLESS I PULL THE BRAKE

PLEASE HELP ME
I recently purchased an old kdx 250 sr 1993 model.
I've cleaned the power valves and the carb.
Now she doesn't want to rev up unless I hold the brake lever in (or short out the wires on the switch)
My thinking is a bad earth or faulty regulator, but I've tested the regulator and its fine... and all the earth connections as far as I can see are good.
Please can anyone assist.
I need this bike to be reliable as we are going to do a cross country trip of about 3200km.
