I'm looking for a donor for my kdx/mx swap and I was wondering if there's a difference between the 89 and 94 Most of the bikes I've found are around 2k and thats a little out of the budget for what I'm doing.

I think the '89 has a different KIPS valve design. I know that it has a different water pump seal. I believe that's about it. You know, first year bugs being ironed out.

The 89 KIPS are the same but for some reason the head has a different part #11001-1291 vs 11001-1317

some of the early 89's serial # used a bolt for the magneto and the newer # uses a nut like all the rest of the KDX models

So should I look for a later motor that has common parts. I'm also looking out for parts availability.

By "later motor" do you mean an H-Series or a newer E-Series?
I wouldn't bother hunting a newer E-Series for parts availability, as it is much the same as what you have, and what isn't is generally interchangable. H-Series engines, of course, are gonna have a much more plentiful parts supply
