HI all, I'm from eastern MA, just picked up a kdx 220 this afternoon. I'm 51 and haven't ridden dirt bikes on a regular basis for about 25 years. My son just bought a KTM and my wife thought it would be a good idea to pick up a bike to ride with him (how great is that???). Anyway, it looks like the top end hasn't been touched. It starts on the first kick without the choke and idles fine. The wheel bearings, fork seals, front and rear sprockets, chain and tires are all new. Anything else I should pay special attention to? Also, I want to register it so I can ride enduros and turkey runs. I hear VT is the way to go. Any other suggestions? Excited to get back into it. Any input is greatly appreciated.

where in VT are you ? I'm in Newbury.

You need to replace the piston. Do a search for piston pics and you will see what happens. Mine had a crack in it and I bought another 220 from a kid who had his crack and come apart. If it's never been apart it's time anyway to freshen it up.

+1 on the piston replacement. Don't delay; this is what I found when I got mine apart. Lucky to have avoided a catastrophic failure...

Looks like the piston is the first project. I'm in Massachusetts but I want to ride some turkey runs so I have to get it registered. I hear Vermont is the way to go. I thank you all for the input. I know there's an endless amount of money you can put into this, so I'm appreciative for any help.

congrats on an awesome wife and son. :)

the 220 is known to grenade the stock piston, at any time. use a wiseco and you're set for 5-10,000 miles after that :)

the jetting is rich in stock form, so carry a plug or change it. either way, not much to worry about.

VT works, but I used the SouthDakota route: http://supermotojunkie.com/showthread.p ... r-ANY-Bike! and then transfered the SD title to AL in about twenty minutes. If your state requires full working lights/horns/stuff prior to inspection, just do that, mine did not.

if you're going to dualsport the 220, put a 15 / 47 final drive on it, first is still low enough for gnarly trails, but 6th will cruise at 50mph without getting into the pipe (fuel economy win!) and you'll be much more relaxed when dropping back into the woods. i've enjoyed about 500 miles of dualsporting my kdx these last couple of months, and can't see a reason to start up the drz400 anymore ;-)

congrats young sir, you'll have a blast. the kdx220 makes wonderful power down low, and the top end ain't bad either.

Never too old to ride , which I do every week. 52 and love our 220's.

Just a suggestion - any discussion on registration should be had via PM. WAY too many anti's/huggers around. Wouldn't doubt it if there are a few that have infiltrated this forum. Congrats on the KDX! You should feel right at home on it! See you at the center of the dirtbike universe - TD.
