Hello All,
so I bought this 1992 KDX200 last year.

Its been hell to start...
I think I am flooding it out and/or the mix I made at 32:1 MAY be lacking in petrol...


Here is what I found...


Cleaned carb thoroughly, used compressor...verified float working,.

Sparkplug was found to have an electrode that broke in the ceramic... I replaced this with a new plug, the bike kicked right over, 5 times..I thought I had it licked...

then the next day I tried in vain to kick it over again... sparkplug is wet...

I am not sure what my jets are (I forgot to write them down) I will get that tonight.

Runs great when I have it running... very strong, fishtails when coming ou of a tun if i dont let off the gas...

It will start right up if I give it a breath of ether...
cant get it down the sparkplug hole due to the angle... so it would only be a few drops and fumes...

Questions:
1-What would be correct jet size for this motor
2-What is the correct mix ratio, (I realize that this may vary by oil brand and if it is synthetic or not) please reply with some known good examples...
3-What is your suggestion for sparkplugs for this machine

The stock jetting should be (owners manual): main jet 158, slow jet 48, jet needle clip position 4th groove from top, air screw 1.5 turns out. Lower altitude and Lower temps require larger (richer) jets and vice-versa. Jet needle will be Richest with clip at lowest groove point (5th groove from top). Air screw affect your slow jet, .5 turns out is richest 2.5 turns out is leanest.

The stock spark plug : NGK B9ES or BR9ES with 0.7-0.8 mm gap. I'd start with getting a brand new plug.

The stock mix ratio is: 32:1 which is 4 ounces per 1 (us) gallon. Owners manual says to use highest octane fuel they have at the pumps (I use 93). Buy your 2-stroke oil at a motorcycle shop and made for dirt bikes WITH POWERVALVES, it's expensive but worth it. DON'T buy the stuff from Wal-Mart or Auto Zone for lawn mowers and outboard motorboats. The combo of high octane gas and high quality 2-stroke oil is suggested by the owners manual and will give you the burn and lubrication your KIPS valves need. "Super-M ester based synthetic blend" is a good brand for the e-series KDX.

Owners manual also says that 2 stroke mixture doesn't stay mixed well in cold weather, maybe more oil settles to the bottom of tank at start-up? Shake the bike up well before you try starting it and turn off the petcock and run all the fuel out of the system when you put it away for the night. Owners manual also says 2 stroke mixture deteriorates very quickly, recommends fresh fuel mixture every day. I wouldn't use premixed fuel that's been sitting for more than a month.

I'm no expert at jetting, still trying to find the sweet spot on my '90 and '93 KDX 200's, but I think this information is all correct.

Please post up when you figure out what was your hard starting problem!

Thank you for the in depth reply. I went back into the garage and started at base one. Fresh mix of BEL-RAY H1R PREMIUM at 40:1 and a handful of new plugs.

Started on first kick.

1-Apparently i should not use the marine 2 stroke oil i have a case of. Craigslist bound
2-i did not get the jet size
3-i am hearing a clacking noise besides the two stroke ring diggie diggie ( just found a video and it seems that I do have the correct "sound" when at idle..
I dont know if this is what the KDX is supposed to sound like.
Tomorrow when I return from work, i will try to start the bike again. That is the only test i have
If there is anyone in the Chicago area that could lend an ear i would be glad to offer libations of their choice if they would tell me if the clacking is normal
