This 235 pound guy just won a GP race on a 2000 kdx 220 at an OMRA (Oregon Motorcycle Riders Association) race.
It takes some serious prep work to make em in
to race bikes. but it's worth it.

Bought it in JUNE, pretty whipped with a FMF desert pipe. Installed re-valved 2000 kx 125 forks, clamps ,wheel. Rebuilt shock. Re-sprung for fat guy (me). Serviced or replaced all bearings/seals- chassis and engine. Tossed air box lid, re-jetted, re-geared -13 / 49 and still have 80 mph top speed. Plenty of top end with proper jetting for a 235# rider. Fresh clutch, with re-pinned perch/lever for one finger operation. Home built skid plate. Fresh Tires, new bars/risers, cables, grips, brake pads wide pegs Best 2 mods- WER steering damper ,and a tall/ medium Ceet brand seat with gripper cover. I have bent the stock shifter with my boot in every race so that is next.

Doesn't sound to heavily modded, just well prepared. I've got a pc pipe on my 220 really like it. I had a 200 that i sold with a WER steering damper wish I would have kept the damper, I miss it. I think I've got 13/49 gearing too, like it real well. I just gathered all the parts to put 98 rm showa conventionals on mine, we'll see how that works.

Good Job !
I like the idea of wider pegs, how did you locate the new spot for the cable end on the clutch lever ?
(I'm guessing you used a 3/8 flat endmill etc. but I wouldn't know where to locate it)

The wider pegs give a definite floorboard feel which I like .
I repinned the pivot bolt. I just drilled a pivot bolt hole in the perch and lever in front the existing pivot bolt. Then I cut off the old pivot hole on the lever, and instant 1 finger operation even with HD basket springs.

New shifter works good.
They just don't shift like a Honda, but wfo clutchless shifts up or down are no problem.
Tried tranny fluid , all flavors , no go, ended up with Lucas atv 10/40 syn blend. Works good enough to cross the finish line in front of swarm of $$$$$ orange, red and blue super efi equipped machines with the buttons. It's a keeper.

Just rode the KDX after installing a RB Designs head and carb. Really impressed with the low speed stuff. Runs better everywhere.
2015 will be fun. :kick:

I just picked up a similarly modded bike(at lease suspension and go mods.
I hope to try it out in a GNCC next year.

the lone KDX got a 5th and a 3rd at the Eddyville gp's
Next round is at Timber Mountain XC near Medford Or. 4/18
These bikes were made for this stuff!

You're the man! KDX in a sea of orange and 450's. Love it! Keep us posted.

Come on up to Shelton enduro 1st weekend in May. True KDX terrain. 90+ miles of singletrack. It's awesome.

I'm getting ready to do my first gp on a 220 and I'm super worried I'm gonna get smoked. I only have a pipe and exhaust done, what other mods open up the top end on this bad boy?

desert pipe and lose the airbox lid.
Jet it correctly. 13/49 gearing.
RB mods are not needed, and I think they actually hinder the over rev a little.
I have the mods and noticed the low/mid is stronger, but lost a few mph on top.
If you are a Pro class rider, you might want a lot of top end, that's what 450s are for.
I'm an amateur class rider, and I try to run as much of a race as I can off the power valve, using the 220s midrange and low end .
Staying "on the pipe" will wear you out quickly and you have to make it at least 1 1/2 hours at minimum , sometimes the race will last 2 hours.

Thank you for the advise, I've been riding for a long time just never competed in a race, so a little advice can go a long way. :grin:

Got a 5th place at Timber Mountain.
Tough course, Hillclimb after hillclimb. after hillclimb. Broke my clutch lever and crashed at least 10 times due to no clutch .
Stupid move, should have just DNFed , but my dumbass has never DNFed yet .
I beat the hell out of myself and the bike and got a 5th.
The next day I was so beat up that I couldn't make the second race!
Lesson learned. Know when to say when.
Did see another KDX during the race.
Followed it for a few seconds, passed it and yelled TEAM GREEN and rode on to my next crash !

CHINA HAT ISDE .
was a good experience. Bikes were impounded overnight.
Next morning, 22degrees made for an entertaining start line for some bikes with buttons.
KDX started 1st kick and ran ok (4500 FT) right to a rock garden /lava bed, where other riders struggled, the kdx performed it's magic and carried me thru it incident free !
The rest of the race was ok and I was awarded a silver medal for my efforts.
which I think is 110% to 115% of the winners time/ points. The lowest time/points wins the race.
