I mentioned a while ago that I picked up a freebee 1984 re 200. I hoped to restore it for $500. total ticket looks like $750. All the parts are gathered & reassembly has begun. Hope the pics turn out.

Nice work so far. I'll be watching as it progresses.

Did you powder coat or paint the frame? Looks nice.

Doooooooood. That looks nice!!

Stripped the frame with aircraft stripper. Primed & painted with Good ole' rustoleum then wiped it with spray turtle wax as soon as it was dry. Did the small parts with semi gloss engine enamel and baked in the oven for 15 min @ 250. What we divorced guys can do in the kitchen!!!

I striped and repainted a 81 GS550 in much the same manner. Worked great, but being a married guy I was relegated to the cold garage!

I got a good use pipe for the '84 on e-bay for $45. It showed up today at the post office because they can't figure out the difference between my mailing and shipping address. Now I gotta' wait till Monday because the PO counter was closed. Paint the engine & mounting brackets tomorrow.

Another wasted Sunday afternoon......slavin' away in the kitchen!

Home economics 101: My 16 year old son learned how to remove & install wheel bearings, install a sprocket, use a torque wrench and install an axel. How not to use the sink for a parts washer.

More progress this weekend. Refurbished the plastics.

Installed the sprockets and chain, clutch & throttle cables, foot pegs and rear break linkage. also torqued all the nuts. Not to far from finishing!


Does anyone have an idea what this might be worth when I'm done? Might flip it & start cleaning the kitchen for the next build.

Holy Crap!!!! The JB weld and heli-coil didn't work. That's an oil leak not a puppy puddle. Home ec. class might get a little more interesting. Case splitting & replacement, engine rebuild. Oh well it's winter & I'm made of money, right. Ebay here I come.


$750 total project cost just went out the window. I need a lesson in economics! If it's free....there's a reason!

Oh yeah, the plastics turned out better than I expected. Sanded the faded scale off with 220 on my DA, handed sanded with 320, 400 & wet 600, masked & sprayed the white with Krylon plastic paint. (rattle can) then cleared the whole set, again with Krylon. Put a cheap decal on the tank. The rear fender is new UFO. The front fender has some deep scratches and didn't turn out as well as the rest. All in all, i'm pleased with them. We'll see how long it lasts.

I found both engine cases on ebay for $55. Gasket set didn't include seals, had to buy them separately but the whole ticket with shipping was $136 including the cases. I guess I can live with that. I'll shop for flywheel puller too. Are they universal or Kaw specific?

If it is not threaded on the inside, it will need the kind with the three bolt holes. There are three 6mm bolts that thread into the flywheel.

Thanks, Ill pop the cover & check it out before I buy anything. E-bay has all kinds of pullers, so it won't be hard to get one.

It is not the common KDX one, with 27mm a 1mm left hand threads. That is for the liquid cooled KDX's and some of the KDX80's. This is the common one:




The one for the air cooled large KDX's looks more like a steering wheel puller, these may not be the exact ones, but they are similar:





I have used a steering wheel puller with a mixture of washers, 6mm bolts and patience.

Put a allen head bolt in the end of the crankshaft, then grease the top of the bolt. then let the big bolt of the puller contact that little bolt head instead of the actual crankshaft.
